I barely got enough money left over after paying for my gas, food, and rent to pay for my cigarettes.

This is America! I deserve better.

The economy is in terrible shape. Minimum wages jobs do not pay for apartments, let alone food, high gas prices, health insurance, etc. Unemployment is high, just try looking for a new job, and find out about that nightmare in itself. Two minimum wage jobs is what you have to take, not many people are hiring full time. Or just file for a bankruptcy, clears the slate of most debt collectors. I heard that you can still get a college loan from the government, even after bankruptcy. There are places also to try before bankruptcy, Credit Counseling places can put your credit cards all in one monthly payment for you. You have to work hard to pay the debt, but it is a good way to get credit cleared. Better than the people calling you for every dime, wanting money you do not have. In today's times working hard, and working harder seems to be the new life for many.
It is terrible to be in debt. Don't be afraid to go to churches for food and help, the city you live in may be able to help with rent, too. There is help, but you have to look for it. Call 211 Connect for job placement, they will connect you to WorkOne in Indiana. Times are tough for everyone, even the rich.

Getting rid of all credit cards is the best way not to spend. Getting rid of internet and cable is good, too. The library has internet. You can get free cell phones if you don't make enough money. If it is health related bills you owe, try paying everyone $10.00 a month each. It is called good faith payments. When it is too much to bare, bankruptcy is the best way out.If you have a nice car, make the payments. It stinks "not having" reliable transportation. Bankruptcy will take your car if you have equity in it, try Credit Counseling if it is credit card debt, and throw the cards away.

Sorry, somethings are exempt in bankruptcy up to a certain limit. Cars and homes can be exempt, depends on your debt. I just know it is good to have reliable transportation, and a nice car is something good to keep if you can possibly do it. Don't pay attention to people being negative on here. Being in debt is difficult.

About 97% of people with significant debt stress are incompetent in their personal financial management. Debt should only be taken when absolutely necessary. Rarely does that include anything other than a home.

Credit counseling is a terrible suggestion. I know, I went through it when I was fresh out of college and had so much credit card debt that I didn't know who to pay first.

First off using credit counseling to negotiate debt impacts your credit almost as bad as filing a chapter 11 bankruptcy. The difference is that bankruptcy stays on your record forever and chapter 11 falls off after 7 years.

Credit counselors require an upfront payment in exchange for the promise of reducing interest rates. Oftentimes after taking the upfront payment they do nothing to reduce interest rates. The counselor takes your money and provides no services at all.

There are any number of books out there which detail how to negotiate interest rates without going through a credit counseling service.

As somebody who had debt issues, your general incompetence disqualifies you from giving any intelligent advice. Thanks for trying, though.

Oh please. I had several thousand dollars worth of credit card debt when I got out of college and I paid it off in less than a year. I was looking for a way to reduce the interest rates that I was paying and found that credit counseling was not a viable option.

Linda does not seem to have an intellectual basis for her opinions, she just copies and pastes whatever she happens hear on the radio.

Bankruptcy stays on credit for 10 years. Credit counselors do not ask for a lot of money up front these days. Shows you are a good creditor when you pay the cards. You have to shop around for Credit Counselors.

No idea why people think its ok to buy cigarettes, pop and video games when they can't pay to keep the lights on. Dumbest damned thing I have ever heard of. Happens all the time. Hope their house gets towed away.

Rich people can go on cruises, buy a condo in Florida for a vacation home or travel twice a year...Pop costs $1.25. video games are what $3.00 to rent, cheap cigs. can cost $5.00. I do not think judging people on how they spend money is a constructive thing to do at any time. I have never heard of a $10.00 light bill, have you?
