Hi, I'm John Markham, a Boy Scout from Troop 70 is raising awareness in Lake County about family emergency preparedness for his Boy Scout Eagle project. Last night the City of Minneola announced by proclamation December 3-7, 2012 as Family Emergency Preparedness Week. My Eagle Scout project involves working with the Lake County Emergency Management to promote emergency preparedness in Lake County. The majority of citizens are unprepared for an emergency weather condition. We donít want to see what happened up north with hurricane Sandy. Millions of people were shocked by a storm that left damage in many communities and left citizens without power for several days. The best defense is preparedness and public education about the dangers of high winds, storm surge, flooding and tornadoes that may occur in conjunction with a hurricane or tropical storm. Citizens need to adequately prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and it is critical to support educational and awareness programs throughout Lake County. I urge families to have a meeting to discuss emergency preparedness. I also suggests that families develop a 72 emergency kit, purchase a NOAA radio, set up a text account for your cell phone, create a first aid kit, and develop a file of important insurance papers and personal documents. The Boy Scout motto- Be Prepared is important for all citizens to remember.
