Governor's call for welfare cuts angers Democrats

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's insistence on cost-cutting measures to weed out what he has described as "waste, fraud and abuse" in California's social service programs has struck a nerve with Democrats, welfare advocates and the frail.

Believe me the "poor" have their vices just like all eschelons of society. Growing up, one of my "poor" friends would have kids with different men, some wanted to marry her, she refused as she received section 8 and did not want to lose her social service benefits, so she lived with all of them and lived like a queen. It was a great set-up and many folks on section 8 and welfare do the same thing, it's pretty common practice. She knew it was wrong, but as she said "The Government makes it so easy, how can it be wrong?"

This is the best thing that Arny has done. Imagine my disgust having to support these people with my hard earned tax money! This reform is long over due and should spread to S.S. fraud, workmens comp fraud, and handicap permit fraud. If your 22 and cant support yourself, go back to mom and dad. If your recieving welfare, you need to be picking up litter or picking strawberries 8hrs a day. Stop enabling people to do nothing.

Imagine every well-bodied '"American" employed, clean streets, crime at it's lowest, and health care services that everyone can afford. Despite the current hardships that everyone has encountered or is going to encounter in these difficult times, it is vital and beneficial to our society, that California get it's act together. As a working, middle class and middle aged "American", I have seen our once, fabled and beautiful state gradually spiral down the toilet . I am truly disgusted with the policies, practices and laws that the State of California has been using. I believe that our state can flourish once more by eliminating welfare for people that have been abusing it for many years, even generations. It is time to cut the umbilical cord once and for all!

Do the taxpayers ever receive a 'thank you' note from welfare recipients?

Clean up the rampant fraud in welfare programs and jail the abusers who were never qualified for benefits. Then put them to work cleaning up our cities. No cell phones and no discount bus passes nor free medical. Get to work and earn a living and you too can pay for the benefits of other recipients! Especially new arrivals from across our borders.

Non-qualified welfare abusers are beginning to piss-off the taxpayers!

Nice start governator, while I like the idea of the tit running dry for all the users and abusers, now do some REAL budget cutting and take away all the govenment cars, credit cards, expense accounts, and seriously cut back on the government support systems...in other words SHRINK YOURSELF! I agree they need to get ride of the ones that abuse this system and give it for the families that really need it. Especially section 8...I live in a really good family neighborhood and realized the house next to us in sec 8...for a year in a hlf we delt with drug dealers and domestic violence, finally got ride of them and now we deal with a person who used her daughter and grandson for sec 8 approval...we had issues with her daughter who didn't live there at the time for public nusance come to find out her daughter is a craiglist prostitute now lives there due to not having her mom kicked out. now we deal a prositute getting beat up 2am in the morning, many diffent guys coming in and out, and smelly garbadge being piled on the side of their house...its not like we can move we own our home.com plained numerious times not just me other neighbors too but their landlord did nothing so i do agree they need to get ride of the ones that abuse this system its not fair that we tax payers pay the majority of there rent...rent is $1,200 they pay only $97.00 a month who payes the rest we do...

If we are talking about abuse the discussion should include the administrators that have allowed it to happen. I think many of us are aware of someone that has/is abusing the system. The only thing I ever here from the administrators is that we can't afford to cut programs.

Maybe we can cut some of the administrative overhead that can't manage the programs or stop/mitigate the abuse.

This story is so old it's ridiculous.

But I think once the federal 5 year cap on welfare is over, CA picks up the tab after that, until the kid hits 18-even if the kid has an illegal parent, but the kid must have been born here.
