Michelle, please see my comments posted today, we all REALLY should look into a class action law suit.

I agree with the class action law suit against united travel schools. I attended in 1988 and graduated . They never did offer job placement and then I found out they went bankrupt. With all the money they collected from all the students who attended, they had a gold mine. However, the person or persons who owned or ran the business obviously hit the lottery. This school was a sham. I had students loans up the wazoo and they got there money when I filed my taxes every year until it was paid off. Class action lawsuit would be the right step but who do we sue? No one knows what or where to go. Any suggestions?

Anyone have any information regarding the closing of this school? It had another entity entitled United Schools, Truck Master. l atteneded the school on 32 Hercules in Clearwater when it closed. Any help would be grately appreciated. Ken Davis, Detroit MI
United Schools had several corporations listed under their name. United Truck Master, United Institute of Technology or UTI and United Travel Schools. The company filed bankruptcy through the Tampa Florida Bankruptcy Court. I believe that United Truck Master was bought out by Truck Master which still operates out of the Tampa Fairgrounds. The company was also affiliated with Pittsburgh Technical Institute or PTI. I believe they all closed when they filed bankruptcy. The original company ran there offices out of Clearwater Florida on US Highway 19. You may want to contact the Tampa Bankruptcy court in Florida. Hope this helps.

I too attended the school on Hercules, in Clearwater in 1987 and "attempeted" complete the computer portion in March 1988, but it had already closed. They also stated right in their contract that the offer Job Placement service and that it impossible when they closed before we could even graduate. This has got to be FRAUD.
My wife and I attended the school in October 1988, so it was open later than March then you state.

I enrolled at this school in September 1987, completed the "Home Study" portion in one month, by mid October 1987, and then was told that I had to wait until there was an opening in the computer portion (SystemOne), before I could attend this part and graduate. I was told that the soonest opening would be in March 1988. I called in mid February, 1988, and was given a date to begin the Computer training, in early March and when I arrived for the first day of class, the doors were locked and a sign posted on the door announcing that the school was closed. I was told by their main office (out of state, I think it was Texas, but I am not sure) that since they had closed that location and the nearest Travel school was more than 50 miles away, that I would not be required to repay my student loans (less than $3000 at the time). When I filed my income tax for 1991, they kept my refund of almost $900, stating I owed for my delinquent Student loan, I then completed a form that IRS sent me, stating I DID NOT owe the loan, due to the school closing before I could graduate. End of discussion, until 1994 when I had a (very small) settlement coming and this loan showed up as an outstanding debt. My attorney for the injury claim investigated and then I received (and still have a copy of) a letter from the United States Attorney in Tampa, Fl, stating that the school closed in 1988, filed bankruptcy in 1990, and therefore I DO NOT oew this money. Ok for the next 12 years until last October when I get a nasty letter from Dept of Ed, demanding the repayment of this loan, AGAIN !! They now have decided to garnish my wages, and the debt is almost $12,000, with interest and penalties. But since I am now a State employee, they can "get me" Any suggestions out there?
I think we need to get a lawyer and file a Class Action Law Suit..........
OMG I am in the same exact boat as you. They just garnished my check -told me I owe $10000 dollars.. I originally took out a loan for $2500 after my home portion was done went to Florida for the computer portion for 1 month, and then they closed. Has anyone been able to help you out? I'm trying to find a way around this .....clueless in Akron Ohio

I have an update for anybody that is still fighting with the loan they took to attend United Travel in Clearwater. I just spoke with my Senator's office and they are trying to help me, so maybe your Senator could help. If the school closed 120 days within your completion then you may be eligible forgivenesss, worth checking in to. Goodluck all of you that got scammed by this so called school!!

I already have a letter from one person from [email protected] that told me my husband should get a full refund for the money, I sent a package to the DOE, I included a spreadsheet with the info from this site and a copy of everybody that has been involved and told them they should make this right with all the people who have complained & their parents. We will wait and see what they say, but there were 54 people plus my husband that I found info on, the DOE should have taken it upon themselves to correct this issue years ago instead of letting this ruin people's lives.

My husband received a letter from the DOE which says he will get a total refund for all monies the DOE has received from him, it might take a month or so to get the check, but they also said they would be letting the credit bureau know they can clear this from his credit debt, I will follow up with them once we have a check in hand.
