Updated: Aug 15, 2008 08:40 AM EDT Video Gallery <1> Aug. 14, 2008 QUITMAN COUNTY, Ga.(WTVM)-- After nearly 30 years together, Stewart and Quitman County students will no longer attend the same high school. Back in 1978, Quitman and Stewart County High Schools consolidated into one school. That means most kids that live in Quitman County had to travel to Stewart County to get a high school diploma. The new school will be a new addition to the existing elementary and middle school in Quitman County. It will include about 8 to 11 new classrooms, a gym, and band room, which will cost the county about $4.5 million dollars. Despite the education budget in Georgia facing cuts this year and next year; the school board isn't worried about the cost. "We went to the citizens of Quitman County two years ago about a SPLOST. We got an overwhelming response by citizens to build a new high school wing," said Quitman Co. Superintendent William Burns. The new school will not have a football team starting out, but they are planning to have basketball, baseball, track, and volleyball. Construction on the new school should begin sometime next week and should be complete in time for the 2009 - 2010 school year. They're expecting to start the year out with about 85 high school students. |

Clay ponders charter School
A new charter school will be the topic of discussion at a Nov. 17 meeting at the old gym in Fort Gaines. Anyone from Quitman, Stewart, Randolph, Early, Calhoun and Clay counties interested in learning more about charter schools is urged to attend.“The more people who are interested in seeing a charter school beginning here the better our chances of making it a reality,” stated Garth Duke- Barton, Pastor of Fort Gaines United Methodist Church. Tim Pinson who helped form the charter school in Baconton, south of Albany, will be at the meeting to discuss how to start a charter school. A charter school is under the local school board. It is a public school and must accept all local children who ask to enter up to school capacity. Tuition is not charged. Teachers are employees of the school board and receive the same minimum salary, health and pension benefits other public school teachers. The school is governed by a board of parents who keep the mandates of the contract they drafted and got approved by the county school board and state charter school board. Most charter schools require parental involvement such as 20 hours of work in the school a year and attendance at PTA/PTO meetings. Failure of parents’ committment is cause for removal of a child from the school. The old gym is located on Carroll Street next to the health department one block east of Washington Street. Quitman County will be one step closer to a new high school next week. According to Quitman County Superintendent William Burns, the school board will open bids for the school’s planned construction project next Thursday. “We hope we get some very good bids,” said Burns. Burns said four construction companies have already expressed interest in the school’s construction and the superintendent hopes more will come forward by next week. He said the board will take a few days to consider the bids before choosing a company to construct the school. The new high school will be located on the same campus as New Quitman Elementary School. The 16,000-square-foot building will include 11 classrooms and a vocational and science lab plus a 650-seat gymnasium, fine arts building and band room. The high school will also have its own parking area and a connecting 30-foot walkway to the New Quitman Elementary cafeteria, which the high school and elementary school will share. The classrooms’ projected date of completion is July 15, 2009, with the gymnasium a short time later. Burns said that though teachers have yet to be chosen for the new school, he encourages anyone interested to contact the Quitman County Board of Education. “I think people are really, really excited about the new high school,” said Burns.“The transition will hopefully be smooth.” Burns predicts the building project will cost approximately $4.4 million with funds coming from an approved $3.5 million bond,$700,000 school surplus and $1.5 million from the state of Georgia. Burns hopes the system will not have to use all of the $3.5 million available through the bond. He said citizens of Quitman County are supportive of the new high school and many students are eager to attend. With the high school, the campus will serve grades K-12. Burns said 85 students currently at Stewart-Quitman High School could attend the new Quitman high school plus 25-30 students attending schools elsewhere. The school also plans to have extracurricular activities such as basketball, baseball, a band and possibly track |

Quitman Co. students, teachers pleased with new school
By Anastasia Harbuck Eufaula Tribune Published: August 11, 2009 Ninth graders Javia Johnson and Tamonica Wilson weren’t just starting high school Monday. The 14-year-old classmates were members of Quitman County High School’s first freshman class in approximately 30 years. “It’s a different experience - being in high school,” said Javia, a Georgetown resident who is grateful he doesn’t have to make the daily commute to Stewart-Quitman High School in Lumpkin, Ga. “I’m excited (about being a freshman),” Tamonica added. She especially excited about playing on Quitman County’s new basketball team - the Hornets. Basketball, along with cheerleading and band, are among extracurricular activities that will be offered at the school. Tenth grader Cassie Eleby says she’s looking forward to participating in all three. New team will begin playing this November
By Patrick Johnston Published: May 28, 2009 » 0 Comments | Post a Comment June is still a few days away, but Quitman County basketball players are already looking forward to November. Nov. 17 is the day to be exact. That’s when Quitman County High School plays Pacelli in its first game since the 1970s. The school, which is opening this August, will have varsity basketball for both boys and girls. For three decades youth from Quitman and Stewart counties have played together as Stewart-Quitman High School. Now Quitman County will have its own team with a mascot (the Hornets), school colors (maroon, Vegas gold and black) and a new gymnasium which will be constructed by the fall. Quitman County’s opening game against Pacelli is a scrimmage and will not count toward the teams’ overall records. The first official game for QCHS is Nov. 24 at Baker County in Newton. The first home game, ironically, is Dec. 1 against Stewart County. QCHS boys coach Jaymes Harlan says excitement is already building toward the season. “This community loves basketball and supports the team wholeheartedly,” he said. |
