Lol...no, I'm not D.A., but we were good friends. and also his brother S.A. They bought our property and built their business there. My father and I built sprint car chassis in the basement of that building for years. I had a good friend that everyone thought he was crazy, but actually he was brilliant in many ways. His name was Jay Vantuyl, and some called him 'Snail', and others called him 'Rembrandt', as he was a sign painter. He would paint cartoons on my father's race cars, and one time he had to leave and so he came back the next day to finish the cartoon. He was on the other side of the race car and I didn't know it. I said to my father, "This new sign painter is as slow as a snail." Jay just erupted in laughter, and I nearly jumped out of my skin....lol. So the name stuck. He taught me how to sign paint and to do lettering when I was only 12 years old. Mel Simpson and his wife moved to N. Carolina. They never brought Kenny around too often because he was a very troubled little boy, and I'm trying to be polite about it. He was Korean, and had no accent, but I'm very pleased to hear that he turned out just fine....lol.. Yes, poor Buddy. He was about 38-40 years old and had the mind of a twelve year old. He lived with his elderly parents in the home next door to McMurray's Methodist Church. He was the kindest person though and never bothered anyone in all the years that he lived there. He was always very kind and respectful to me and my family. For years he took the Greyhound bus to Northtown and worked for a company down there. Someone else had mentioned the chiropractor's office across from the church. That was Dr. Stallings, and few people knew that the little foreign sports cars that he drove to work every day, that he actually raced them overseas and had won a lot of races. They were Mini Coopers, and Austin Coopers, etc. Next door to him was Helen's Beauty Salon, and she had bright red hair and extremely good looking. The Skelly Station was owned for years by a guy named Ray, but I never knew his last name. He sold it to Marty Musteen, who was a great guy. He sponsored some of the race cars in the area. |

Excellent post! I recall Doctor Stallings being a rather earthy and interesting fellow, he used to cook up some very interesting food, I will leave it at that. His assistant was a red headed woman who gave some very intense and poweful adjustments. Jay is an incredible talent and I believe still lives in a registered "Missouri Natural Area" in the village,(much to the chagrin of our illustrious Village Board of Directors, it's a long tale, don't even ask!) As I've related in another post, pardon my redundance, I recall you as being a fine young fellow with dark hair and glasses. Were you acquainted with Larry Stock or Tommie MurrayI They were about your age I surmise. They used to help me with odd jobs for spending money. Again, thanks for the excellent post, I thoroughly enjoyed it. |

Larry Stock sounds very familiar, but not Tommie Murrayl. My memory doesn't serve me.
Another doctor that I really liked was Dr. Roderick. I would like to think that he is still around somehow. He helped so many people, and would give them a financial break if they needed it. Another favorite of mine back then was the police chief Bill Hoback. He was a friend of my fathers because they both raced sprint cars all over the midwest. One of the police officers was J.L.Cooper, and he too raced sprint cars and modifieds. I remember one time someone said, "Why is Claycomo such a hot bed for sprint car drivers and owners?" Someone chimed in, "Well its not because they are racing Ford engines..!!" (My father and also Bobby Layne (Pleasant Valley) raced Ford motors for years. I never said a word...lol.). |

Mr. Village Idiot:
I just got through taking some pictures of Al's Pawn signage (adult room, etc). You are welcome to add them to your archives. |

How funny is that, after reading a post where someone denied there was an adult room in that place, I just had to get a picture myself, you know how things seem to disappear. What was in that adult room any way? |

I beg your pardon, but what does that prove? You could have "photo-shopped" the image. Just my opinion. |

I really enjoyed reading all of the posts concernng all of the businesses in Claycomo. I grew up attending church at the Church of Christ across from the sunrise service station. I remember the Christmas tree lot on the corner where McDonalds is now, every year I couldn't wait to see the trees on that lot. Mr. Turner who ran a construction company lived next door to the church. whitey Hughes used to attend services once in a while, and his wife brought the kids quite often. the members of the Church used to pool their money and rent the roller rink on monday nights the building was a quanset hut, butler type building with a half round roof. they also had a pop machine with ice water, in which i nearly froze off a few digits. the Pixie drive in located aproximately where the pizza hut Taco bell reside now was later moved to the location that is now Puff da dez I think any way it is in that little area just before the bridge heading toward the old drugstore. They must have done some fill in where the pizza hut sets now, because i remember the Pixie sitting almost down in a hole at that site. I had a friend that took accordian lessons in the back of the Dolly's dry cleaners. the Jocar hardware eventually became Kramer hardware and eventually moved to Kearney mo.
