Second Amendment rights, beware of who you vote for!
Hi, Bethie....I pay close attention to how candidates vote on gun issues before I make up my mind about who to vote for. It's important to me.....

<quoted text>You, sir, are an idiot. You know nothing about my life, but you dare tell me what my life is? Yes, I have lived in the USA my entire life, not counting a year in the wonderful peninsula of S. Vietnam, some time in Germany and some time in Japan. I relish my ability to protect me and mine from criminal elements, who, by the way, are and will be armed. I also have farm animals and relish the ability to keep predators at bay, also with my gun. You think I live in fear and that I am a chicken?? I spent a year in Vietnam and 25 years as a city police officer after I returned to the good old USA. I am 61 years old, seen it and done it and anyone who thinks I am too chicken to protect me and mine will be very surprised when they try something stupid with me. Anywhere you have freedoms protected by federal law, you are going to have higher crime rates due to the criminals rights being protected, and, even with the "higher crime rates", I would not live anywhere else. I have been to and lived in many different countries in my life and would not leave the USA for any of them. I am very happy here, sorry you are not so happy where you are.
Well, seems we are not quite tuned in - or playing on the same key so to speak.
I'm a bit - just a little bit - older than you. I have a military background too. That in itself does not make me more fit for judging a society and the quality of it.
We are talking about attitudes here. there is no such thing as an ultimate truth.
Every day is a challenge - if you are determined to keep a democratic free society intact and your liberty.
When you grow up in a tiny, little country - compared to your "enormous" USA you simply have to look at many things in life from a different angle.
May be we are not that different in attitudes at the end of the day - but our ideas of a good society - and our priorities may be different.
It is possible to conserve the hope that it is
normal to create a society where it is not necessary for the individual to arm himself for daily protection.
I maintain that it is more American than European to think it is simply necessary to be armed to survive.
Just think about why it is like that at yours - since you too have spent years abroad - which the majority of Americans have not.

I always tell my wife to rip the eyeballs in case of rape.
I won a fight when the man was biting me in the rib cage and I stuck my finger in his eye and ripped. Another time I stuck my finger in the man's nose. I learned to street fight in my early days in the big city of Dallas.

You don't need muscles to win a fight that way. Very efficient. Actually very similar to the way we teach small kids to stop picking their noses. We use the right hand fingers. A forward move straight into their face -(counting from the thumb (= finger #1) using fingers #2 through #5. Finger #2 and #5 straight into the kids right and left eye respectively and
simultaneously finger #3 and #4 into right and left nostril - all in one swift, firm -straight forward move(important!). Guaranteed they'll never again pick their noses! The drawback, however, 90% of them need glasses or a seeing-eye dog rest of their lives - but they'll definitely never again pick their noses.........

I'm reserving judgement on this for now.
We may share some ideas, but I do not feel it is necessary to be armed for daily protection. We (Americans) do live in a violent society and I cannot see it changing much, due to rights of criminals given by the law of the land. Due to that statement, I feel it is not a bad thing to be armed, and know how to use a gun, know when to shoot/don't shoot, etc., because most of our violent criminals are armed and will kill you or seriously injure you if you come in contact with them. I love the individual freedoms of my country compared to the freedoms of most other countries. Since I do live in the USA, I don't really know how peoples of other countries feel about their governments, and will not profess to know. I just know that from what I've seen in my life, I would rather live here than anywhere else, even if being armed is sometimes a necessity. Self protection is not the only reason for guns, you know. I hunt and eat what I kill and I thoroughly enjoy target shooting, just as other people enjoy pool, darts or other pasttimes. Sorry if I jumped over the cliff too soon. I just get tired of hearing all the negative comments on my rights to have and bear arms in my country.

Just for records: I am a hunter (very active) and a target shooter(was very active - and dis very well in competitions in my younger days). I keep my many guns locked in according to our rules here. No concealed guns allowed.
I am never uneasy moving around everywhere unarmed, 24/7. I wish all of you 300 millions could have the same daily life and experience.
It takes a dramatic change in attitudes and laws at yours to get there - but if many enough of you want it strongly enough you will achieve it - not today or tomorrow - but, say, in 25-50 years - your grand kids could be grateful to you. As it is today many future grand children will never survive to celebrate their 20th birthday.
30,000 killed by firearms annually at yours. We've got less than 5-10 a year. For argument:Say 10 a year shot here would compare with less than 700 annually at yours. 30,000 a year at yours would compare with 450 a year here. See the difference?? And what would you really be sacrificing as a hunter and/or a shooter to get your laws, rules and regulations in place for achieving our numbers??(We are actually having as
many firearms in private ownership per capitae here as you do, roughly spoken).
In this year of election at yours the cry for "change" has been in the forefront. You seem to need many changes - at least in attitudes towards your society and politicians.

Are you saying or believing we are communists - in line with Cuba and China?
Why should America be turned into something deserving comparison with Cuba, China or the former Soviet Uion?
Why not look to the Scandinavian "mixed economies" and various other western Europe "solutions"? Land owners here own their land indeed.
But do look out for China - they are growing at a pace probabaly never seen before. They'll certainly turn away from Mao's communism as the success makes more and more people get out of poverty and asking the same things we've been asking the last 50 years in the west. They are building up a modern society - and a tremendous currency reserve from there exports-
and extremely quickly too- at the same time that USA is building up its DEBT to other countries -almost equally fast. Frightening indeed, isn't it?!! Even if you don't want changes you will definitely get it - I don't think you can stop the development enforcing dramatic changes in the future by just sitting down and saying "no way, we are Americans and we love our land". Your adaptability will be strongly challenged, making your present challenge called Mexican "illegals" look like just a litter of badgers under your outhouse, Rocky boy!

Just look at the the fall in industrial production at yours over the last few months - people getting laid off you know, car production is down considerably. House prices down, food prices up , gas prices up ...and it will continue still some time before it turns to the better- regardless of dems or reps at the helm. but with dems there you might have some hope of the consequences for the little man being a bit sweeter.....I think.

I used to smoke it quite a bit long ago but since becoming a family man I have a huge responsibilty towards my family by not smoking and that includes not really drinking.

Too afraid to lose job. It will never be legalized unless it is in California. But I wouldn't mind smoking a toke while outside and looking at my grass grow but my family would be in big trouble if I did and could not pass the drug test if I got hurt on the job.
I'll just stick to a little beer while listening to Hank Williams while barbequing. I enjoy it, it does not take much to keep me entertained, with a little beer and listening to Hank, ants crawling up my tree does the trick.
Have fun the 4th.

Rocky you are the last of the true family man.
What plans do you have for the fourth??? I am going to try so hard to get down to Kentucky but at this point in time I am not too sure I can leave. Cross your fingers. If I am stuck in Michigan I will SCREAM, not that anyone will hear me but whatever!

As for Pot or Brew------Brew gets my vote. When I smoked weed was in way too much of a fog.

Hi Bethie and Rocky!
Tell me a little about how you (Americans) traditionally celebrate the 4th!??

(We have got our "17th" (May)- celebrated in - I guess - a unique manner.....The Swedes are very envious and people many places atound the world have caught interest for "our way" of celebrating our Constitution day.(Our Constitution by the way (Approved 17th of May 1814) is in many senses 50/50 American and French Constitutions - hope we picked the best half of both then).

Mainly out by the lake there is a huge fireworks display, extremely crowded and takes a long time to drive out from the park.
Lots of Police out and lots of drunks out too. Roadblocks are out also.
