Pa. town aches as plant closes after 105 years

Full story: The York Daily Record

There's a hum here, soft yet ever-present. The noise is drowned out during the din of the day, but late at night the sound of the Owens-Illinois glass plant reverberates through this town of 6,000 people.

Resist the incapacitation of America. Don't buy at Walmart, Target, or any large box store. In fact go downtown and support your local mernchant. Buy local if possible, and always American. If you buy from here the money will stay here. It is about time we get back to some basics with our buying tendencies. I see many small towns in similar fates.....we will be forced into third world conditions if we don't kick China to the curb. If we need something then we will make it, it is about time the man who makes something is valued over the paper pusher.
Buy American? Stupid Americans don't even know how to make tennis shoes. All the tennis shoes are made in a different country. Lots of American products were not made in America. Too stupid....

Ok, "John Doe". I have so many things that I would love to say to you right now. There is something seriously wrong with you. These "jerks" that you are talking about are honest people who are working to support themselves and their families. Now that the plant is closing in Clarion and opening several factories in China, hundreds of these honest, hard working people--including my father who has worked there for the past 35 years--are pretty much being kicked to the curb and told to start their careers all over again. My dad has used his many years at the plant to bust his ass to get the union position he has. Obviously you're just upset that you're not qualified enough to have such a position, or I'm sure you wouldn't feel this way about it. America is still going through a recession and you want to take away the few jobs that people can count on here and send them overseas? I agree with the comment above mine. If you like the idea of sending work to other countries so much, then bon voyage!!in
Why doesn't he just relocate to China if he doesn't want to change careers.I mean changing and learning new things is really bad isn't it?

his only career is crying because everyone else makes to much money. he could fill out a paper with the welfare office and get an advance on his next check, and maybe they will even through in a few extra food stamps for him. you know... just enough to get him by till a $95,000.00 a year job opens up... got my fingers crossed, should be any day. he needs to realize that there is always going to be someone making more money than the next person. if you can't live with in your means.. then it's time to adjust your spending or else look for another job. it's as simple as that. so if your not putting your resume out there with job applications... quit your bit!!!!! we don't feel sorry for you,we all started some where. your only here for one life. you might as well go for broke and make the best out of it. it's no sense in being miserable.

Because he has a family and obligations to fulfill here. Plus, the life he lives here wouldn't compair to a life in China.

Why should a company pay a jerk $30 an hour when they can get better work overseas for a fraction of the cost? This is yet another reason that labor unions need to be shut down. Let's have a pitty party for all the worthless union workers. Unions are ruining this country. If they would shut all the unions down it would be a lot cheaper to live. The unions are what are killing the postal service. The lowest paid city postal worker pay grade 1 step A makes $1638.85 every other week.
you should be happy we make over $30.00 an hour. that means more taxes off of us,... which in return means more welfare checks and food stamps for you. now, aren't you glad you support the people who earn it. heck, just me knowing your in bed till 12:00 noon, thinking about the real working people makes me happy. not to mention, i'm sure your family gets all happy and emotional knowing you support us as well. i mean he!!, after all... we do feed them and keep them warm. when you tuck them into bed, you be sure and tell them that the working people of this country loves them. that way they will have sweet dreams, no horror nightmares about the people who don't want to work. ok... if it makes you feel better, the working people of this country love supporting you to. there, now... can you sleep better?
