4 I know many people, including my next-door neighbors and my sister, for example, who take care of their totally-dependent children THEMSELVES. When you expect the state to do things for you that people have always done themselves since the beginning of time, you shouldn't complain when the "service" isn't what you would have provided if you only had the character to do so. |

2 Judge not, lest ye too shall be judged. I'm glad you're not over simplifying things again, Blob. In the past, people like these boys were warehoused in institutions under considerably more deplorable conditions. I see an image of you getting slapped around in a nursing home when you're old and defenseless because your kids won't devote much time to you. Look forward to your own little "Snakepit." In fact, you should watch that movie sometime and you might see things differently. |

2 Bingo! That would be a cause and effect concept that is far too complicated for the right wingers to comprehend, or even admit. A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members and the righties could care less ... unless it was their own flesh and blood. Then, of course, they would again become hypocrites, which is their hallmark. The boys in this story could end up becoming another Stephen Hawking, but those who would deny them the opportunities to reach their full potentials would just call them leaches and shutter them away. Hah is right, you cannot have it both ways. |

1 We can expect a lot more stories like this if the government takes over services to care for all of our vulnerable people. |

3 Well, thank you for adding nursing homes to the list of evil state-run services. Anyone who would put a loved one in a nursing home should be required to forfeit any and all rights to that loved one's estate. I cared for two elderly parents in my home until they died. It used to be that's what everyone did. |

3 So, they care for their loved ones full-time and you think they're not getting various forms of government assistance because they cannot work? Ah, the world you see must be pretty limited with the kind of blinders you obviously wear. |

I was wondering the same thing. The mother is more like a business manager trying to hire good employees to raise her children. |

2 To you and the commenter above. Doesn't it occur to you that care was and still is being provided. Because an employee choose to be negligent in their duties, doesn't mean that care was withheld. As was said elsewhere, where were the parents? Oh that's right - giving over the child rearing duties to the state (AKA - Taxpayers)! |

1 First and foremost, these children are not only totally-dependent but medically fragile. It would be IMPOSSIBLE for this mother to care for BOTH of these boys 24 hours a day. To compare the care that these boys need to others with disabilities is not an easy task. Secondly, in the past the state has cared for children with disabilities in state hospitals. So families have not been caring for them since the "beginning of time." It has only been in the last 20 to 30 years that families have been offered the resources to keep children with disabilities in the home to care for them. Not only is the care provided less expensive but it is "usually" of higher quality. This offers the children a chance to grow up in a homes where they are loved and cared for. Sadly, too many people today do not value the lives of people with disabilities but only see them as a drain on society. Until one has lived with a medically fragile child, it is impossible to comprehend what it takes to properly care for them. |

2 So, you've tested them? From the story: "Alex, 15, is a bright student taking Advanced Placement classes and dreaming of being a missionary." You can't even spell "cognitive" correctly and you're passing judgment on these kids' intelligence? WTF? With a post like that, "Simple" doesn't even begin to describe you. |

2 You must not know much about financing a nursing home stay. When you enter a nursing home, they do a financial analysis. If you have means to pay, you do. If you have some means, you pay until you run out & then the government kicks in. If you don't have any means to pay, the government pays. The government doesn't allow the elderly to give away their money (or hold onto their money) while taxpayers foot the bill. Usually, when someone enters a nursing home & doesn't leave, there is no estate for the family. Nursing homes are not cheap. I love it how people judge without knowing the facts or understanding the issues involved. |
