It's that for most of the last 8,000 years, since chickens were first domesticated out of a Southeast Asia jungle fowl, people have lived among chickens, keeping them around for both their meat and their ovum.

I dont understand why chickens or even ducks were outlawed to begin with. Yuppies eat eggs too but they cant stand the quacks and hen noises so why dont they move to an apartmrnt.
