It is amazing how this black panther myth gets blown out of proportion by misinterpretation of size an imagination. If they are as common as reported, carcasses would be turning up. If there truly was one, it would expire in a decade - end of story. If there was a breeding pair, they would disappear in time due to inbreeding depression. If they are a genetical misfit that spontaneously appears in various generations of a cougar population, that does not happen because the sizeable population is not there, and it requires the appearance of several rare genes to occur at the same time in an individual to produce a pure black puma. And finally, when a knowledgeable person tries to explain all this to the public, some pompous dolt who probably does not even have a high school diploma calls him a skeptic, and an even more stupid public believes him. So, if I am wrong, then a carcass of a free ranging specimen should show up any minute due to the huge numbers of sightings. That will never happen.

I saw a huge black cat from my kitchen window about 4 years ago. It was about 50 feet from me walking the edge of the woods. I saw it for about 5 minutes. It was about 3 feet long, and about 2 1/2 feet high to the top of it's head, with a very long tail. I called the local Wildlife Division and they didn't seem interested. I told a few neighbors, but we live in a very rural area in N.W. Fairfield County, Ohio, so no one else had seen it. We live in a very wooded and hilly area, with state parks around us. I saw it again 2 years ago close to home in a farmers field, walking along a wooded fence row. Two days ago my husband was behind our home and there is a open field riseing to a wooded forest, that is about 30 acres in size, across the road. He came and got me, and the binoculars. We watched it for about 15 to 20 minutes, just wandering through the over grown field towards the woods, until it went into the woods. We see deer in this field almost every evening, and we have seen as many as 30+ in diffrent groups at the same time. There are many wild birds and animals and we have small creeks in several places. So this area could support a wild cat, or cats. Now I am not the only one that has seen it. So that's 3 times in the last 4 years. They do look like panthers with their long sleek black bodies. This is not a myth this is a fact!

On october 2009 my brother Caleb went outside to give a flashlight to my dad nextdoor and when he was walking back it was dark and Caleb heard a woman screaming in the woods beside him, he got scared and ran back to the house as fast as he could. I agree to run because there has been reports of big cats around or attacking humans and besides my does live near the Apalachian Mountains.

Seth, I live in the foothills of the Apalachin Mountains. My address is not Columbus Ohio,as stated but it is Canal Winchester Ohio. I only wanted to post orginaly just to let those know they are not alone in their siteings. The Oct 25th 2009, posting is so wrong. Where I live I do not think you could find tracks,or remains. It is just too wooded, and wild. All the land around here is privately owned, with no hunting allowed. and this area is patroled by State Forrestry people almost every day. I would not mind if others saw the cat, but I sure do not want others trying to hunt and kill the animals just to prove they exist. They do!
