Nobody mentioned deporting the 7 million Undocumented Immigrants? That would create plenty of space for American citizens and shore up the doctor shortage. Where's the diversity of opinion here?

Ed Hernandez is off base again. You don't reinstate affirmative action...what you do is work harder with minority students in high school and college to allow them to be competitive with other applicants.

Glad to see Hernandez out of office soon.

As long as foreigners immigrate here illegally, quite often in poor health bringing diseases with them, there will be health problems.

This so called diversity crap, is just another affirmative action and quota poly.

"Addressing the primary care doctor shortage in the San Gabriel Valley isn't just about producing more doctors, it's also about the type of doctors produced.

More culturally sensitive doctors, particularly Latinos"

This is racism cloaked in the veil of multiculturalism. According to the rationale presented here an Indian, Black, Asian, etc doctor isn't properly suited to treat South American patients.

Liberal racism is a form of mental illness. The sad thing is that those afflicted with liberal racism will deny their affliction until the day they day.

Most people, including illegal aliens would not want anything to do with that evil 'All Fruits Episcopal Church'.

Why do the liberals always feel that they need to fix everything by instituting affirmative action. Listen to the Dr at the beginning and end of the article, raise the pay for primary car doctors and motivated physicians of all races will flock to serve the community. I seem to remember politicians saying we should be color blind in our treatment of people, should we not be so with physicians. Recruit the intelligent of the ethnic communities served and pay them well and they will serve. Something about this aspect of capitalism overwhelms socialism in its success in all endeavors.

The reason is liberals live in a different world of make believe, where everything has to be equal. Socialized medicine has always been a failure, but liberals can't understand it.

these politicians are idiots.
One of the main problems: Medicare/Medical reimbursement rates are around 17 cents on the dollar. Why would a physician want to practice in a city where the bulk of patients get reimbursed thru MediCal? Why would you pay more than a hundred thousand dollars for med school, and give up nearly ten years of income earning potential... only to get paid 17 cents on the dollar?

This ain't rocket science. And, it's gonna get a whole lot worse with the new health care bill, because there will be alot more people in the system paying nothing.

Fix reimbursement rates and frivolous malpractice lawsuits, and you'll go a long way...

thanks for posting that. Interesting piece.

When asked about the resentment some struggling Americans may have about taking care of illegals, I like when Fabiola replies, "I don't understand the resentment. God will find a way to help them too."

Some interesting numbers from the piece:
300,000 children born to illegals each year who get auto-citizenship and can sponsor their family members at age 21
$1.1 Billion in estimated healthcare costs to illegals

40% of births in McAllen,Tx are children of illegals
$200 Million in *uncompensated* care each year for the McAllen hospital.. that's money the hospital has to eat.

No wonder hospitals are "going out of business" and there's a dearth of primary care physicians in these areas. No wonder at all.
