California politicians busted for spending taxpayer money on New York entertainment

As if New York doesn't have enough crooked politicians of its own ...

The bright lights of Broadway beckoned corrupt California officials to cross the continent and spend taxpayer money on nights at theaters, baseball games and pricey dinners at the Big Apple's finest bistros, authorities charged yesterday.

The four were from Irwindale, a bustling metropolis of just over 1,400 people where the main entertainment is watching cars at the local speedway.

The bureaucrats and politicians did have enough taste to pass on Los Angeles, just 20 miles away, for the allure of the world's greatest city.

SMALL-TOWN 'BIG' THINKERS: Irwindale, Calif., City Councilman Mark Breceda (left) and former Councilwoman Rosemary Ramirez appear in court yesterday to face charges they and two colleagues illegally lavished the charms of the Big Apple on themselves with taxpayer money.

They were busted yesterday for misappropriating public funds to finance the trips, which took place between 2001 and 2005.

They claimed they had to come to New York to pitch for a higher municipal-bond rating, and they did manage to squeeze in some time on Wall Street when they weren't hanging out in Times Square.

They lived high on the New York hog, staying in five-star hotels, guzzling $250 bottles of wine and spending evenings on Broadway watching "Mamma Mia" and "Phantom of the Opera," authorities said.

"Mostly they partied quite a bit," Los Angeles Deputy DA Nipa Cook said.

"They spent money on Mets and Yankee games and Broadway shows."

Councilman Mark Breceda, retired City Manager Steve Blancarte and retired finance director Abe De Dios are charged with five felony counts. Former Councilwoman Rosemary Ramirez faces one count.

Prosecutors said the officials used public money to pay for $250 Yankee tickets; $260 tickets to "Follies" on Broadway and $1,027 for brunch at The River Café.

On a trip in 2003, they had only eight hours of scheduled meetings, yet they spent six nights at the lavish Ritz-Carlton, checking in on a Saturday night, even though no business meetings were scheduled for Sunday.

They also saw a matinee of "Jackie Mason's Laughing Room Only" followed by dinner at Atelier on Central Park South.

Former Councilwoman Rosemary Gutierrez, who came along on one of the trips but was not charged with a crime, justified their actions by saying New York is an expensive place to do business.

"It's not like we were meeting in Irwindale or in the state of California," she told reporters. "It was New York."

As I stated "CarParker" I will be relentless in exposing you as the revengeful, corrupt non resident person who has no other desire then to defame the Breceda's, Irwindale and Baldwin Park due to your own self distraction. The undisputed facts are that your old property that was in shambles has been turned into a beautiful residential community. Your junk yard was declared an eyesore even though you had ample time to rectify your illegal actions.

Do I hear you crying mr Hunley. All you have privided was opinion. Were you there ? Do you have first hand knowledge. The true answer is no. You create misleading information twisted to your benifit. Do I really need to keep posting about your criminal record, lack of business knowledge or carelessness of public safety ?

Jim Hunley has been a plague on the community for over ten years. He is a convicted fellon. He has stole, cheated and lied. He continues to be a burden on society. He is not eligible to have a voice in government, he can't even vote. He has been claiming for the past two years that Councilman Breceda is a criminal and is going to jail. Hunley states he is a fighter for justice when he himself is a villain whom has served time in prison. He lost his property that was filled with city municipal code violations on Shrode Avenue. The property was contaminated with rabid rodents and human biohazard waste. The property was refurbished and now is a desired area. Hunley is only seeking revenge on a city that kicked him out after several warnings to clean up or get out. If Hunley was my tenant, I would have evicted him also.

October 28, 2010|By Jessica Garrison and Richard Winton, Los Angeles Times

Four current and former Irwindale officials, including a councilman, have been charged with spending thousands of dollars in city money on lavish business trips to New York that included outings to five-star restaurants and Broadway shows, baseball games and rounds of golf.

The four are accused of traveling to New York for up to six days at a time, allegedly to get a higher bond rating for the city, then improperly treating themselves to entertainment such as Yankee and Mets games and shows including "Phantom of the Opera" and "Mamma Mia!."

Rumor has it that an ex-cop forced to retire had proof of all this corruption and all the recent officer misconduct but they forced him to retire a few years ago and paid him off to keep quiet.

The guy had a SPOTLESS record for like 20 years, then all of the sudden the hold made-up charges over his head and force him to take a retirement package.

After they got rid of him, the department and city had no one watching them and went crazy. He was the only "white guy" not related to anyone in Irwindale who was a decent honest cop.

How many WHITE cops at Irwindale do you know that retired within the past few years that have no ties to Irwindale? And magically after he 'retires', all of the top administration at the PD (Chief Benudiz, Lt. Barnes, and Lt. Bojorques) and the City Manager also just suddenly 'leave' all on their own? Really??

The 'proof' is in the circumstances and details right in front of you...no one voluntarily leaves a cushy job when they get paid over $100,000 a year unless they are forced to! Who cares where he went -- and I heard that he wasn't 'fired', he honorably retired.

Well so far all you have are half truths. Your other blogs prove that. You do not know all the circumstances therefore you don't have the whole picture. You are in your true form. I want hard facts before I make any sort of judgement. Too many times the truth comes out much later. And you out of all know that to be true. Take your convection as an example. You thought you could scam money from people and say you were undercover. The truth came out that you were guilty of a felony.

Also it goes to show you how much of an idiot you are. One of the Lietenants is now a Cheif of Police, and the other had more then twenty years at Irwindale and he retired. I searched out the truth and that's the truth. Something you continuously fail to do. One again Hunly, You're EXPOSED.
