It's good to teach these kids everything should be given to them for free.

First of all, There were many WHITE kids there, One picture does not show all 1600.
Second of all, it is not the kids fault the parents are having to depend on these programs to help. I am sure the parents are hurting inside to have to depend on these programs.
Third, The manicure I agree was a bit much but it was beauty school students who needed to put in time to get experience.
I feel bad that you guys are so mean "hearted". I mean really, you can't just be glad there are still good people in this world willing to help a child? I am sure the parents are grateful but would much rather be working.

Don't get excited Humble, "Hmmm from Covina" is really Hispanic pretending to be White and just trying to stir up conflict along with one or two others here. You must be very new to Topix and did not realize this occurs. Maybe mad because Covina was not listed in the article and didn't get a chance to participate?

OK, I can accept that some families don't really have the funds for back to school supplies and are there for the benefit of the kids. It's hard on kid's who have to go to school without the needed supplies and suffer from nasty remarks from other students. But I took some offense to the family that's been going there for three years. That to me seems like it's just an opportunity for mom to get freebies. After three years, don't you think you'd know to set aside a small amount of money for the up-coming school year? Or do you just say: "Oh, well, I know where I can get all the stuff for free every year" ? That's taking advantage of charity, and possiblly depriving some kids who are really in need of help. It's the same thing with the Christmas gifts-people see or hear "Free!" and jump on it. Selfish, greedy and lacking in pride, it would seem. Some people think it is their God-given right to take for free what they can really afford. And no, though, for a few years, my kids and I struggled financially and we all had to do without in many ways, not once did I ever take advantage of those programs. I always felt that there might be another family whose needs were more dire than my own. Now I should just grab a neighbor's kid or two and show up to be greedy.

Not to be cynical or anything, but it's always the single mom raising three, four or five kids minus the gang brood loser sperm donor dad.

Is that an accurate assertion?

Charity is great and I give myself, but it just seems like many of these so-called low income families take, take and take.

How much does a freaken back pack cost and pencils and paper.

Geeez.

all i hear on other comments are how hard working hispanics are and they never ask for any help, and blah, blah, blah. These kids need this help and i am happy to give, which i do, but i'm tired of the smoke blown up my about how independent and wonderful illegals are. Common, most, not all, people in these lines are from illegal immigration within 3 generations. Look at the other lines in Los Angeles, its all hispanic (not to mention all the riots lately) I have nothing against latinos, i just hate the illegal invasion of mass poor and now California is totally F'd for good.

Do you feel the same about ALL the Africans,Philippinoes,Armenian s,etc.-just because they're legal doesn't mean they don't ABUSE the system as well! They ALL love FREE things!Look at our health care, they go into it NOT because they LOVE it,but because that's how they can STAY in this country and then have their 'anchor babies'too.

You guys are so sad. You guys see one poor hispanic and group them all together, do you say that when It is White people too? Does it really matter the race? If you guys were to open your heart and just be thankful you do not need any of the "Free" stuff I am sure you will be a lot more happier instead of having to vent on the tribune website. One point is correct,I to get mad when I see anyone who is on welfare have and an expensive car, cell phone, and nails done. Those are the ones I get frustrated with, but not the kids...I feel bad because some of them don't have a chance.

Cato, What you said was just plain ignorant.

Well all I can say is I hope everyone who feels this way makes sure you extend the same at the voting booths. This is the only way to stop the craziness which is going on in SoCal.

Maybe we can really stop this madness called illegal immigration by all.

People are really tired of all of it. I am thankful for those May Day marches because it really woke up and opened the eyes of many people.
