LOL wrote: <quoted text> You don't need a hole in the ground with a carved rock to remember somebody. Cemetaries are nothing more than a catering service to the personal vanity of dead people. Maybe so, but back in the 1800s, most people were dirt poor and spent every dime they had on a gravestone when a family member died. Yes, those folks are dead, too, and wouldn't know the difference. But, that's just mean. I don't believe in ghosts, but wouldn't it be the ultimate payback if each of those boys woke up in the middle of the night and saw one of the people whose graves they desecrated standing at the foot of their bed staring them down?

I'm assuming that you haven't thought out your response very well but at 17 you are nearing adulthood and should be able to use even a minimum amount of reason and logic. It is okay to use "slang" when writing in your journal or hanging out with your "buds," but when speaking in public, the use of slang or chronic misspelled words just shows ignorance -- not "style." To answer some of your points: It is the parent's fault for the actions of their children. One of the most difficult jobs that a parent assumes when they decide to have children is to prepare and mold that child to become a responsible adult later on. It's not an easy job and as we see in today's youth, too many parents have shirked that duty and instead want to be "pals" with their children rather than make the tough decisions and be "parents." Children have to be taught to respect other people's property, to be accountable for their actions (all actions have consequences - some good, some bad), and that the world does not revolve around their every want and need. It's quite apparent that these parents failed all the way around and should pay the consequences for their "inaction" in raising their children. Now, for the subject of language and spelling. Right now you don't see the importance or relevance of using it properly but I'm going to assume that some day you'll want to go out on your own and get a job. Unless your goal is to spend your working life in menial labor at poverty wages, the corporate world will expect you to know how to string together a coherent sentence that resembles proper english. Keep your slang and misspellings for your friends and inner circle if you wish, but at least know the difference between bad grammar and good! There's a place for both of them but you'll need to at least appear to have more than a 6th grade education when you're in an employment interview. The way you're "writing" now makes it seem that you haven't gone beyond that grade -- in fact, I've seen some 6th grade essays that would put your grammar to shame. Start reading more -- newspapers, magazines, editorial essays... study the language and how it's used. I'm guessing that you'll disregard my advice but I'd be interested in talking to you in ten years so your could tell me how that whole "slangy" language is working out for you. OK heres where you messed up... i do read papers magazines editorial essays such as Dear Abby in My local Paper and im going to college to be a teacher

I can only assume that this is a joke.. right? As an advice columnist, she's okay, but you can't seriously call it a critical "essay." That would be like saying the novel "War and Peace" is comparable to "Mad Magazine." Please tell me that you're not going to be an English teacher since I think a degree in PhysEd might be more up your alley.

One parent is claiming that because his exwife has custody of their son, that he's no longer really a parent, and this not responsible for the boy. Amazing! I hope the kid read that.

I used to live near Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and even learned how to spell the name of the city and state.

Wonder what brought on the change?

Only when people profess to be "proof readers" and their very speech betrays them and shows the hypocrisy of their words. This was not a simple case of mixing up the difference between their, there, or they're in a sentence. She claimed to be a "Proof Reader" and wants to instruct children as a career but uses Dear Abby as a comparison to literary thought. There's quite a difference between a misplaced word (although correctly spelled) and such an appalling lack of even basic mechanics in spelling and grammatical intent. I'm so happy that you're keeping track though. I didn't realize I'd made such an impression on you... kissy.. kissy..
