Suspect died from self-inflicted gunshot wound
Supect shot himself while in police custody

A suspect in Church Point police custody allegedly shot himself in the chest Tuesday while in the back of a Church Point police officer's vehicle. He died late Monday night from his injuries.
The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Blane Daigle of Rayne.

Daigle had been picked up from the Acadia Parish Jail Monday morning and left the facility in shackles and handcuffs.

A Church Point officer brought Daigle to a residence in Carencro to search for stolen property related to a Church Point investigation.

At the time, the officer was being assisted by a Lafayette Parish sheriff's deputy because Church Point has no jurisdiction in the area.

The police officer believed that a stolen safe was on the property, according to Lafayette Parish sheriff's Lt. Craig Stansbury.

"Upon returning (from searching the residence), he told our deputy there was a suspect in the unmarked unit. When the individual was checked on, he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest," Stansbury said.

Stansbury said he could not say how the suspect had access to a gun. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting.

Church Point police currently are releasing no information and are directing all calls to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.

The suspect was picked up Tuesday morning from the Acadia Parish jail by Church Point Police for investigative purposes, said Maxine Trahan, public information officer for the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office.

She said protocol was followed in the transfer.

"I suppose he was needed for part of that investigation," Trahan said. "He left our facility in handcuffs and shackles."

She said Acadia Parish sheriff's investigators were assisting Lafayette Parish in its investigation.

The Chief(Albert) and Asst Chief(Carl) are the two officers that left the vehicle unattended while the gun was left in the door and the suspect was in the back seat.
