My son will be starting school this fall, and I can pick between Church Hill Elementary, Carter's Valley Elementary, and Surgoinsville Elementary. I really don't know anything about any of these schools, and I'm looking for any information, opinions, or experiences with these schools. Thank you!

Thank you! I wish some more people around here would give their opinions. Seems like no one wants to respond to a Topix thread unless it's filled with gossip..lol.

I love Surgoinsville Elm. not only did I attend there 25 years ago. But my children, nieces, & nephew attend there now! They have a staff of wonderful, caring, & professional teachers. I would advise you to take a trip to all 3 of these schools. Sure they would be more than happy to show you how they operate day to day. Best of luck!

I think all three schools are wonderful schools. Since we moved back to the area a little over a year ago I completely understand where you're coming from and your concerns. We spoke to the principals to get a better feel for the schools. Our children are currently enrolled at Church Hill Elementary and are loving it. Something to consider is Carters Valley and Church Hill Elem. will both go to Church Hill Intermediate in 5th grade (along with a few other schools). If your children attend Surgoinsville then they continue on in Surgoinsville schools (fewer students)until they go to Volunteer High in 9th grade. Not good or bad just different.

Carters Valley! Just because I like the sound of the frogs around there this time of year.

My daughter attended Church Hill Elementary, and I agree there are some good teachers there, but there are also some who aren't so good.

If your children have any kind of learning disability (ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia etc...) I would suggest homeschooling. My daughter is ADHD and we had a terrible time with the teachers at CHE. I asked one if she looked up and my daughter was looking around to just remind her of what she was supposed to be doing, she actually left a message on my answering machine, and I quote, "I have 16 students in my class. I don't have time to make sure your daughter is doing what she is supposed to be doing." Because of that, my child missed out on playtime and brought home so much work that she didn't get finished in the day that it took us around 3 hours every night to complete it.

For us homeschooling is a much better option. One thing you can do for more information is go to the State of Tennessee education website and check the stats on the schools. Also, if you live in the city of Church Hill, your child has to go to CHE. I tried to get my daughter moved to Carter's Valley because a teacher from another school told me they are better able to deal with children with learning disabilities, and my request was completely denied. I even offered to pay tuition and was told there were so many students at Carter's Valley that they would not move her.

I have a friend with children in Surgoinsville Elementary and they absolutely love it.

Good luck!

By the way, please don't think I am dissing the schools or trying to be negative or downing the schools. That was not my intention. I was just relating our experience.

Thanks

Homeschool Mom, thank you so much for your opinions! It has been really helpful hearing from the other parents in this area. I think we have decided on Surgoinsvile Elementary, so wish us luck! Also, I'm very sorry to hear about how your daughter was treated. You would think that teachers, especially, would understand the needs of children with learning disabilities. Sadly, some people just don't get it. Best of luck to both of you!

I just think homeschool is wrong. Only in my opinion, you take so much away from them how will they ever be social? No proms, no school sports, only mom and dad. There are good and bad things with schools and homeschools. I would just hate to make my child miss out on life because I did not agree with a school. I'm not putting anyone down just as I said my opinion.

i feel the same way, jack.

it would be better if the parents who homeschooled were at least required to have a college education, but they aren't. they aren't required to have any formal education. if any joe blow can be a teacher, then why do teachers have to go to college for four years in order to be hired? there's a reason for that!

however, all thanks to religion, any moron who can reproduce is "capable" of homeschooling. it's sad.
