First of all, just because you had a winning team in jr. high doesn't mean you will have a winning team in high school. That is a whole different level of play and from what I have heard, over half of the girls that played last year aren't playing this year so frankfort will be working with about the same group of girls with the Griffith girl included. With that said, I do agree with the comment above about wilce and griffith working together well and making a difference, but I don't think we are going to blow teams out of the water with the addition of one strong player. I am looking forward to see how their season goes and wish them well.

You are correct. The Birds will be better, but certainly not world beaters. A winning season would be a good goal.
This team has NO shot at a state championship.

I believe you are wrong! Maybe you should have went to one of their summer games. Wilce wasn't there, but the team did pretty good. Now adding her to school ball they will do great. Calvert,Williams, Summers and the Bobbie girl are great players also. I believe they have a better shot this year then in the past year.

I saw them play five times this summer.
Twice they lost to sesser, twice to hamilton County.(Black diamond schools) I saw them beat Sesser on a last second three the fifth time. Wilce was there but a lot of sesser's players weren't including their coach.

But I'm glad for your enthusiasm. Good luck to the girls this year. Hope for winning record!

From what I heard, the summer games that they played, the coach didn't play the right people. They also didn't have Wilce for most of the games. Once they get time to practice together and bond as a team they will really do good. They also have a very young team. And the comment above about no freshmen playing is wrong, there were 7 freshmen at open gyms. Comments should be positive about this young female team. They should be fun to watch. The more support they have, the better they will do.

I agree with you on some things. Jr. High wins don't make high school wins. That is true in ALL sports. So often parents and people see teams excel in Jr. High and flop in High School. They then want to point the blame at everything and everyone. Point is Jr. High sports are a race to puberty and who ever matures first. What you can do to win in Jr. High will not always work in High School, ie one player can not be a team. I will say this though, one player can help a team a tremendous amount. A team can be a 'State Champ" in Jr. High and a state of confusion in High School. Heck, I don't put a lot of stock in Frosh or sometimes J.V. wins either. There are many other variables in High School wins also. First of all the "star" Jr. High players may not put out the effort that it takes to be a champion in High School. When skill and wins come easy early, hard work may go out the window. In this day and age, to be good, a kid has to train in the off season and during season both. Weight room time is one of the most important things they can do. It strengthens, builds confidence, and prepares them for their sport. ALL parents should encourage their kids to be an active participant during the season and off season. Secondly, kids need to take advantage of off season camps and contact days. I know multi-sport athletes are in demand, and it can be very time consuming. Thirdly, a kid needs some down time. I believe that it is built into the High School summer, but if it is not then you as a parent must enforce it. Fourth, there are so many distractions in High School. You will have players get on drugs or alcohol, have much more freedom, develop worse attitudes, struggle academically, move, get a drivers license, get pregnant as with girls, get a romantic interest and forget everything, etc. High School can be very difficult for young athletes. Having said all of that, I believe that the Lady Redbirds should be a solid team this year. They will be young, but there is some talent there. It depends on how well they come together this year. I know you can't always judge by summer, but Sesser-Valier has one of the deepest programs in So. Il. right now. There J.V. team from last year could have beat most Varsity teams. Top that off with them being well coached and very physical, and they are a tough team to handle. I don't know anything about Ham-Co., so I won't comment on them. But, I will say come out and watch the Lady Redbirds. They should be fun to see.

Hamco is pretty good also. Probably a little better than Sesser even. No disgrace to lose to either one of them.

To Birds Fan, I agree with you completely. But I am a little confused about the "star" jr. High player comment? And saying it will be different in high school if the "star"doesn't work hard? All of these girls work extremely hard. I do know that Wilce, Griffith, and Summers on the lady redbirds basketball team are all playing on the same AAU team this year. That should help them bond and that is another offseason work they are doing. Most of these girls play more sports other then basketball. I do know some of these girls, and know MOST of them work extremely hard. Before anybody starts mouthing or complaining about any of these young lady's should watch a game of there's. and before you say one player can not be a team in jr. High, you should have seen some of those games. After reading articles about a certain player and also being at the state games one player might not be a whole team, but one player can sure beat another team. That is what happened. I know that's not how it will be in high school though, Wilce, Griffith, Bobbie, Summers, and hopefully Sailliez will work great. This team already has people talking. They should be enjoyable.

Read closely, and you will see the point I am making. I said for ALL sports. I did at no time question anyones work ethic in particular. I stated simply that it takes work ethic period. I also listed what I think they should be doing. I never at any time said they are not doing these things. I outlined the commitment that it takes to be an athlete, and I highlighted some of the pitfalls they may encounter. One of the quotes that I used to put on my sons mirror was as follows. It is not how you play, it is how you prepare to play. If you look close, I was not athlete nor gender specific. If you also make a closer observation, I stated star Jr. High players. Note the S on the end. That is plural. That observation was made after watching some good Jr. High players that did not do as well at the High School level, leaving people questioning why. I don't get on here and bash kids specifically. I just post what I think to be facts. Yes, I do support all Redbird sports. I attend both boys and girls games. I saw probably all of the high school home games for girls last year. I stated that SVWW is a very good team. I didn't know about HamCo so I abstained from comment. I still stand by my post that they will have a solid season. I will not base any teams season or High School career based on what they did in Jr. High. To many variables as I explained earlier. What more do you want. Before you go and try to twist words, you need to read more carefully.

I think Junior High Girls have had a winning season almost every year if not every year since Coach Sloan has coached them. We never see this follow thru to High School I hope this is the year. I like Coach Hamp but think he needs to see what Coach Sloan does to motivate these girls. High School is harder but I hope the season goes well, remember win or lose they still practice long and hard.

Dear Yep... Most people commenting on this actually care about the town and how the town does. We want our girls to be successful. It does matter. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

AGREE!! This post needs to stay positive. It's been a long time since we had this much talent in the girls program. Very excited to see what this group can do and hope that the coaches capitalize on what talent is there. No, it's not the wnba but it is a sport that these girls work hard at and a few of them will receive college scholarships whether it be in basketball and probably a couple in softball. Nothing wrong with setting goals and working hard towards them. It may not be important to the person that made that comment but it is to these kids and when you work with kids (teaching, coaching) its all about the kids. Go Lady Birds!! Looking forward to following you this season.

I think the most positive thing about this season for the girls is that the wilce girl will not have to carry the whole team. Last year, game after game, she basically worked alone. She did a great job, but she should not have to control the whole floor by herself. So, some of the freshman coming up will contribute and some of the other older ones have improved so I am looking forward to seeing a a team play together, rather than one player that has to do all the work.
