JoJo Johnson, TOTALLY! Kids these days need his determination. Who cares about attitude? He worked hard! Congrats to him on the hall of fame!

This may be off the subject, but does anyone else get tired of seeing our boys basketball players go down the floor screaming and holding up their handslike they are great after they make a shot, even though they are behind by 20 points at the time.

It is so good to see Nick Hall's post on here. Finally, the true story. I don't know where RANGERS is getting his information from, but Matt Wynn never ran anyone off and certainly didn't play people by their last names. He would have played the best players to win, it is as easy as that. Several of the players RANGERS refers to were boys who just could not stay in line. As to the playing 3 sports....that is an old-school rule (ask players who played for Coach Herrin) that is designed to keep boys in shape and OUT OF TROUBLE...which was a problem for many players in recent years. RANGERS...if you don't know the facts, don't start posting on here!
Well I do know the facts if ya didnt come up threw the Benton program or didnt have a name ya didnt play Myself played under Ron at Benton an they Put me on Probation because I wasnt playin aaaat there Level as they say Benton Sports back in the 80's was by name not ability

Raby definitely belongs on this list. Rizzo, you were good, but Raby was better. Hands down. Best since JoJo. Itd be interesting to make a "dream list" of five starters through all bchs history from any generation. Id have ta go something like Raby,JoJo, Doug collins, Curtis Smith and Rich Yunkus. now that team in ther prime could take on anybody.

You should have to be over 55 to post here. If you aren't, you don't have much perspective on who was really good. You also need to point out the difference between good HS players and great players. Doug Collins got better with age. Randy House was also a better college player than he was in High School. Not that he wasn't good in HS, he just kept getting better. All these players you talk about in the last twenty years, compare their HS schedules and competition to the 60's, 70's and 80's, then look a the numbers they put up and tell me they were as good as Billy Smith, Danny Johnson, Bruce Baker, etc... There hasn't been a team in 15 years that could stay in the gym with the best teams from the 70's and 80's.

The real problem with this thread is twofold. 1) You put up higher numbers playing on a weak team playing vs. weak opponents than you do on a loaded team playing good opponents. 2) Benton hasnít played any real competition since about 1990, when they gave up on getting better after several early outs from the Centralia Holiday Tournament. Then the level of competition fell through the floor. Now they write about getting to play the #5 ranked 2A team in the P-ville trny. Really? There was a time in the 70's 80's when they played 6-8 ranked teams every year. Once, 3 #1's in one year. They even took a team in the mid 80's to St. Louis to play nationally ranked Baltimore Dunbar.

In the Centralia Holiday Tournament Benton faced off against the likes of: E. St. L, Thornton, Belleville, Argo, Decatur, Homewood-Flossmoor, Carver, Hersey, Marist, Peoria, Tilden, Madison... And Won.(Up to early 90's, then dropped out about 95)

Now they face off against powerhouses like Olney, Red Bud, DQ, Steeleville.... and Lose.

From 16 teams like those listed above, they picked five (5) players for the all tournament team in Centralia.

Benton alums making that 5 man roster were:
1961 Bob Crawford
1965 Rich Yunkus Jim Adkins
1966 Rich Yunkus Greg Fustin
1967 Dan Johnson (MVP)
1971 Steve Stewart
1972 Bill Smith Paul Dinkins
1974 Bill Smith Rob Dunbar (MVP)
1975 Keith Tabor
1982 Bruce Baker (MVP) Mark Peters Kyle Herrin
1983 Bruce Baker
1984 Jay Schafer
1985 Jay Schafer
Then no more ever again for about 10 years until they dropped out.

You just canít equally and fairly compare people who played in the South Seven vs. Carbondale, Centralia and Mt. Vernon(back then), plus the BIT, with P-ville, Mcleansboro, Olney, Cairo (back then), and the Centralia Trny, with who they play now. What would those guys listed above put on Redbud?

Can you even picture those teams, 65-66, 73-74, 82-83, 83-84 playing Red-Bud, Steelville, or playing in the River to River. Somebody may know, but honestly; Did Hburg, Murphy, Massac, WF, or Herrin beat any Benton team, ever, from 71 to 75 or from 81 to 85? Do you see those banners hanging in the gym? You realize they had Olympians on those teams. Think before you type.

With Danny Johnson's grandson from Marion moving in next year they are on the right track. They have some pretty good freshmen coming in. Need some size, but it is a start.

Well then you must be Danny Johnson, Rich Yunkus, Bill Smith or Bruce Baker. If you include post HS performance you could be Doug Collins Randy House or Kai Nuernberger. If you aren't one of those 7, you are wrong.
