Just drove through tonight with my wife and kids, noticed tonight, that Mr. Murphy has put a sign up that says " do not give donations until you see the elves".. Now really.... I saw another house collecting tonight for a food drive. I have taken my kids through at least 5x's since the lane has opened, this is a family tradition, and I know I gave $5 last weekend for toy for tots. Now, to me this is very tacky on Tim Murphys part. What exactly is doing with this money. We noticed that the city put up power polls and from what we understood the "broke city" pays for that power. I feel bad for the other families, who are collecting for good cause! From what I hear the nightly money collected from the elves only goes to tim murphy not to an organization or to any of the other neighbors. What a shame, a beautiful tradition gone BAD!

I saw the sign but had no idea what it meant or who the guy is that signed it. It did look tacky and a bit desperate. I just assumed the money collected by the elves got distributed to everyones electric bill. If it goes to one man, what does he do with it. The decorations need major renovation and everything looks jumbled. Very disappointed in West Frankfort only holiday attraction.

If you ask me Christmas is getting tacky. As for the sign, haven't seen it. When I was in school (many moons ago) Timbo paid for two power meters other than the one feeding his home out of pocket. Ameren was not willing to turn it off the rest of the year and he was forced to pay the minimum all year long for 2 services he wasn't using. Tim Murphy's display aside what really upsete me is the number of houses that ARE NOT participating in the display. I know it must suck to be stuck with the responsibility of being part of CandyCanLane if you are not that into the Christmas thing, but it used to be a nice 4-6 blocks of decorations and now the decorated houses are few and far between and the ones that are are very sparse. Times they are a changing. I'll tell ya this much. Tim can't turn on a computer, much less log onto Topix so if you are pissed don't bitch about it on here. Hand write a letter and hand it to one of "The Elves" and maybe it will get to Tim.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

I used to drive through the lane several times every year, but even though some love it,the jumble has taken away from it for me but I take others.
Many other light displays that are available do charge for a carload to drive through..add the gas to get there to it and you might as well not go if money is your complaint..been said before, there ain't no free ride.Someone has to pay somewhere.
I do like the lights but on a simple scale, while going through christopher a week or so ago,I was impressed by the small town light displays.
If TM's neighbors want the cash for the light bill ,they can put their own elf out with a can and let folks donate if they wish to the elf they want to have the money.Having said all that....
For alot of the little kids in west frankfort, that drive down candy cane lane is all they have to look forward to,during the season. The joy and happiness they get from it is what matters.Several little kids didn't even get to go that wanted to,due to parents working, laying in the bars.drugged up or for whatever reason the kids suffered, please quit complaining, don't donate if you don't want to,but please take a child that might want to go and can't.I am

The $5 for the home tour is not for Murphy. It is part of the holiday homes tour by another civic group, they get the money.

As for the sign, can't say. I don't think he would compete or have anything against the family collecting "Toys for Tots", but I have heard that people had walked into the area and stood next to decorated property collecting "donations" but it was found out they did not reside anywhere on Candy Cane Ln.

Maybe, just maybe, it was a poorly formed/written sign Murph put up trying to warn people of a possible scam. This time of year, scams abound...

I personally know several of the residents of CCL as well as Tim Murphy himself. I know for a fact that the ones I know don't WANT any of the money that he collects, they simply want him to be honest about where the money goes. The comment has been made by one resident that if the time comes they can no longer afford to decorate then they will simply cut back or stop all together. The answer isn't a donation box in front of every house! A city commissioner himself has told me that the city now pays for all of TM's electricity through the holiday season and the school pays for the decorations, what else is there? If you think about it... Tax payers now pay for not only his electricity but his decorations and his salary as well. Why would he need the thousands of dollars coming in each season? If he donated the money to the many less fortunate West Frankfort residents in the form of the food bank or a local church or something similar it would be different but he admittedly doesn't. He freely talks about needing the money to purchase vacations, and televisions and even a motor for his boat. He brags about how much he's able to bring in without even stepping foot outside his home. He has elves (students) that peddle candy canes for money and then are given extra credit for classes at high school???????? Is that right. I thought community service was achieved by completely "not for profit" work???? Shame on the teachers that allow this. Come clean Mr. Murphy! Do what is right! The residents are sick of his drama and his deception.

Here it is. Tim Murphy takes all of the donations that are given and puts that in his pocket. His powere bill is now being paid by the city. drive down the lane and you will see two new power poles that were erected for him. And he and his sister are VERY upset with the neighbors because they out of the goodness of their hearts started a food drive a few years ago which was doing very well and it was taking away from the donations that go in his pocket. So to bring the money back to his pocket he and his sister have now decided to have a food drive which has never happened in the past. He has not added to his decoration mess in years or updated a thing. So why would he need all the donations? And in total desperation he has now put a 4x8 sign up at the start of the lane asking for stinking donations!

I've got a question. If my taxes are paying the electricity for the silly lane, why do the lights stay on all damn night. at least put some timers on the lights and shut them off at 10 or so. isn't this town broke anyway? hey city leaders, use your heads and shut the lights off!

I don't know about all the bills but I do know that the money that was collected for the home tours was a project for a group at the First Christian Church. I know this as I am part of that group. The WOW gals at the church get every cent collected.

WOW!! U people will always think of something to complain about. So what if he is taking donations! It is probably a hell of a lot of work to put all that stuff out there. He does that for us, I dont even know the man and can see it is hard work. First you complain there are to many decorations then not enough, I say thank u to all who contribute to candy cane lane!

Murph has received a lot of praise over the years for Canday Cane Lane. While he gets the credit, much of the labor comes from his students and the material used from FCHS. So, I guess you could say Candy Cane Lane is supported by the taxpayers.

I guarantee that if Murphy finally got fed up with the BS and quit putting up the display, that the ones bitchin' on here would be the first ones bitchin' because he stopped decorating, all I would like for Christmas is to have my 2 sons in the military home for the holidays!!!! So if this is all that you have to complain about for Christmas then you suck as a human being for not counting your blessings!!!!

Mr. Man, You are so right. The most important thing here is that sons and daughters are away fighting for our freedom. I thank you for their service.Today was a day we here in WF are praying for a young 21 yr. old soldier that has been injured so badly that at first they couldn't move him to Germany. Had to have a leg removed. 3rd degree burns from head to toe. Just stop the silly bickering about things that you do not know of. Stop and pray for Chaz and the rest of the military.

Quit complaining. CCL is one of the few things that WF has to be proud of. Timbo pays his electric bill out of the donations. He certainly does not do it for profit or gain. He just enjoys it. I dont see anyone else going to the trouble. I no longer live in WF it's one of the few things that brings me back to town every year. I buy a tank of gas and Mike's Drive In while I'm there, or something like that. Businesses would be wise to chip in on the decorations, but they could give two shits. Keep up the good work Timbo, don;t let a few topix Hillbillies phase you.

Could be worse, you could drive your family through hell five times at x-mas. That would be a good tradition gone bad.... get over it or stop going.

No, that's not the most important "thing" here, the topic is CCL, Mr. Murphy, and tax dollars; stay on topic and stop ruining the internet for people that are trying to figure out a struggling town's financial issues.

Mr. Murphy does not keep the money. The school cannot afford all of his extras. I mean have I seen how much there is...plus upkeep of everything? I helped all 4 yes of high school and then the year after. The students don't feel labored! They enjoy it and some of them are a part of the Art Circle Club. People in this town love to put others down. our town literally has nothing and it is because of people like you. Maybe instead of botching about how it is ran you could volunteer to help and then get the real scoop before wagging your tongue so much. Give our children something even better.
