No Jeremy did not start the post but we know who did, Not really. I also live in the so called yellow ribbon house. We do have a soldier in harms way and the yellow is a daily reminder that he needs our prayers. Now Candy Cane Lane! Do we like it? We like the idea of it. Every town has one. This is not the first. Do we like living across the street from it? NO. It is too bright, the music is too loud and people will not let us in or out of our driveway. We have been cursed at and people will cut us off and scream at us for going the wrong way on a one way street. It is a two way street and we do not want to wait in line an hour just to get home. Even though we do not like it we will defend Mr. Murphys right to do it.
It makes him happy and it is his way of celebrating Christmas. Mr. Murphy is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and would do anything for anyone. It only last a month and if it makes him happy, then that is all that matters.I am sure that his art students are proud to see their art displayed. Everybody had personal things going on last year (family illness) and tempers flared. But, like good neighbors do, we worked through it. Do I like Candy Cane Lane? NO Do I like Tim Murphy? YES

Oh by the way. My post is from Indianola, IA also because I did not change the city. So those post could have come from anyone. I usually do not post on here nor does Jeremy. Was not even sure how to change the city. I guess that makes me guilty too?

Jane....get a life! If you want to be that critical about grammar and spelling instead of realizing the reality of Murphy using Candy Cane Lane to put money in his own pocket you need to start a new thread. Your kids may enjoy it but trust me...so does Murphy because it puts thousands of tax free dollars in his pocket every year.
Kiss my arse, I have a life...I just think it's funny people are on here judging other folks for whatever, yet they can't spell for shit, and still try to hold theirselves, on this website of all places, to a higher standard..I doubt the man makes "thousands" of dollars, and if people want to donate to him, what business is that of yours? If it doesn't involve you directly, why get all stink eye about it? Don't donate to him...Idiot.

LOL.. No, Jane isn't my real name, "Linda W"...What makes you think I'm angry? Just pointing out the obvious while other tools try to bash one of the handful of positive things our little town has to offer.. No chill pill necessary, you can keep it..

"Not Really" I assure you I didn't start this post because I'm one of the few people on topix who is willing to use their real name. If you can explain to me how to change my city from Indianola, IA I would appreciate it because I don't even know where that is! I have nothing but respect for Murphy and what he does for the community and this town...he works very hard every year to make Candy Cane Lane exciting for the kids.

The school (us as tax payers) pay for the supplies. The city paid for the pole and his electric for the month of December. This came from the horses mouth, stupid. He is self centered and stole the idea from the orginal founders of Candy Cane Lane. He called his neighbors thieves because they collected for Toys for Tots and the local food pantry. He said they were stealing money from him. Candy Cane Lane was not even started by him but everybody is so discussed by him they quit decorating. It is a money making business for him and it has nothing to do with Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of Christs birthday, not a tribute to Michey mouse.

the people across the street from murphy are gettn pretty nervous! you cant change where your computer pings from.your computer is going to continue to ping from indianola, thats why you may have not started this, but you have commented multiple times under multiple names .and people who actually no how this topix works gets it. my suggestion would be to stop getting on this site. its obvious now his neighbors dont like him. as for my family we live about a hour away and still enjoy going thru and looking at the christmas lights.

Not sure if this will make sense to you but here goes. The location that appears with your forum posts on Topix is the location of your internet service provider (ISP)AND MAY OR MAY NOT BE YOUR ACTUAL LOCATION. Lets stay positive people. No multiple here

Every household with an internet connection has at least 1 unique IP address. This ip address is in a block of IP addresses called sub-nets. These subnets can be tracked a number of ways, but geographically they are usually tracked by what is known as geocoding. Geocodes are generated as people navigate to certain websites and enter personal info including addresses. So, even though they don't know that lets say 64.213.20.5 is actually assigned to a customer at 1301 east oak in West Frankfort, IL they do know that several customers in the same block of ips (or sub-net) live somwhere in westfrankfort, IL.
The problem is if a subnet is large enough the IP addresses will be spread all over the region and it is difficult for the geocodes to be accurate. All that to say, topix has NO IDEA where you are actually located because the internet is a complicated place.

I've thought for years that Candy Cane Lane should run through the park. First, it would cut down on traffic being backed up on Main St. It would also provide more room to spread the decorations out, so you can actually see them. People that don't want to participate won't be bothered. You could have people selling hot chocolate and carolers in different places. Donations could still be accepted at the end. What would really be neat is if some could arrange to have horse drawn carriage rides through the park. That would be a great memory. Snuggled up in a carriage with some hot chocolate and people you love looking at all the Christmas displays and listening to carols. I guess for now, I will just enjoy it how it is. With a small child, we go through most nights. Merry Christmas to all!

Jenny, I agree with you. Have thought the same for years. Sadly decorations were put in the park a few years back but the little good-for-nothings in this town had to run through and tear them up. Murphy was asked about moving his out there but wanted to keep them closer to home. DuQuoin puts there in the fairgrounds and charges to go through it not just a donation accepted. I wish we could do something similar here. Maybe Murphy should think about it. He's not going to be around forever and what will be done with it all then?

Yup,
Vandalism has spoiled a lot of nice things for this town. I understand it's a problem everywhere though. Gotta ask yourself are we failing at raising our kids or is there something in the water?
Even candy cane lane gets vandalized every couple years.

we personally look forward to candy cane lane every year, my son loves it! however, people dont know how to follow the damn candy canes and cut through the middle so we sat in a line of honking angry motorists for over ten minutes because nobody was moving! pretty annoying, but love the big display he has! he does it all for free so i dunno why ppl would feel the need to complain
