I work in Marion, and every time I tell a black dude where I'm from, it's "oh...you're not racist are you?"

Where does this come from? I know that I'm not racist, and all of my friends aren't racist...why does Benton have this reputation?

T-ville, Royalton, and quite afew others really ARE racist, but they don't have this reputation

Anyone know where this came from?

Yes, most people in Benton are SUPER racist. When I was in the 6th grade (I'm 27 now) there was a black family that made the mistake of moving to town, and idk maybe there was more to it, but they held a KKK rally on the square and the family left. I'm amazed to this day every time I see a black person in Benton, it's came a long way, but still has an even longer way to go.

Have you read the thread "Blacks in Benton"? That will explain it all. Yes...racism is rampant in Benton. Plus...about five years before I moved to Benton with my family there was a KKK meeting on the courthouse steps. Plus....have you noticed the very small amount of blacks in Benton...very small number. The town is made up of many old people who are still in the same mindset of decades ago. They pass that to their children who pass it to their children. Unfortunately, I believe it will be present here for a long time.

I keep hearing this shit like a broken record...OMFG THE KKK HAD A MEETING THERE 10 YEARS AGO...So, any town that the KKK has a meeting in is racist? What the fuck happens if the KKK has a meeting in Chicago? OMFG, CHICAGO IS RACIST!

Please. Don't let a few individuals define an entire town.

It is not JUST about the rally on the square years ago. It's about the people who backed it at the time, and still back it, and even if it hadn't happened, are still racist regardless. I don't know what else to tell you. There is a reason why Benton has the reputation it does, it didn't come from nowhere.

You're right. The town is racist. A person I'd worked with for around a year told me just about three or four months ago that she hated black people. Other people are worked with tried to get around waiting on them. It's ridiculous. No, that one rally does not define the town. However, the actions and beliefs do. And a majority of the people have racist beliefs.

We need to bring KKK rallies back to the square. They are long overdue. Bring Benton back to our roots, to a time when this town was something to be proud of.

The Klan needs to reawaken, step up and do what needs to be done here. We need more gatherings on the courthouse steps. Help cleanse this town of filthy blacks, white trash, felons, drug addicts and other scum that has begun to infest this town over the past 15 years.

What people don't talk about is the fact that, during the rally, you couldn't hear what they were saying because of the protesters. AND the rally ended early because of the same.

They deserve protest. However, how many of the protesters were from Benton? They could have been from any number of cities. As for the Klan comments...if that's supposed to be a joke-then it's not funny. If you're serious, then you need to catch up to this century.

If you cleansed the town of all the filthy blacks, white trash, felons, drug addicts and other scum Benton would become a ghost town. There wouldnt be anyone left. I mean are you really serious! Get a damn life.

I don't think we exactly need a more visible presence of the Klan. The reputation of Franklin County alone accomplishes what it needs to without the negative publicity that large meetings bring about. I think most of us are perfectly fine without seeing a few busloads of black protestors unloading on the square. It is just unfortunate that the eminem/MTV generation has been dumbed down to the point of thinking it is acceptable to imitate the culture of a race that is, in fact, simply obsolete farm equipment......

ill tell ya what. I guess im a little racist. I hate the fact that blacks live here, and i hate the fact how people think its ok to let them move right in and have children with our white folk. And i hate the fact we got so many whites people who are proud to walk, talk, and act like their black!!!

Sure they have the right to.......thankfully though, most choose not to exercise that right. Most people are able to get the hint when they aren't welcome. Before you demand those of us unafraid of the "racist" label crawl out of our hole do a bit of self examination. A large percentage of people who claim to "not be racist" are only that way due to lack of interaction with blacks. No need to be racist towards them when you are never around them, right? Say you went shopping in Fairview Heights......walking out of the mall at night.......you notice a group of 4 or 5 black male teens standing near your car, baggy jeans and bling and all. Now imagine that group was instead 4 or 5 white teenage males. Which situation makes you more nervous? C'mon.....no need to pretend neither one or both equally here in the anonimity of topix, 90 percent of people are going to be more worried by the black group.........the other 10 percent just got carjacked. Nothing wrong with being a bit racist, most people are.......just a shame so many people deny it out of fear of being labeled that way.

I grew up in Benton and for a long time I will say that I was a racist at one point in time in my life. Since I left and served in the military where you are around a lot of diversity, things have changed for me. Integration is the best solution. Racism is just plain ignorant. I believe in freedom of speech and that all men should be created equal, that being said you should not bash anyone for the way they were born. Anyone is just as good as anybody else no matter the color of someone's skin
