At war with ourselves

I have to say, when reading posts and responses, my heart aches. Everything from an agency that HELPS our community being accused of bringing "skanks" into our town, to individual judgement based on either fact OR fiction. This is so very upsetting. When you see people lined up in front of crosswalk, do you think they WANT to be there? Nobody wants to go hungry. NOBODY wants to go stand in line starting at 6am just to get a "maybe" on rental assistance. I do agree we all need some type of discipline in our lives to keep such monstrosities from happening to ourselves. However, it isn't as easy as it sounds to just "go get a job" Yes, Go get a job, even if it is a McDonalds or whatever... it STILL may not be enough to take care of their self or their family. So what do they do then? They HUMBLE themselves to go and ASK and WAIT and HUMILIATE themselves in front of judgmental asses to get assistance. And while I may not have an iphone, I most certainly would NOT judge a person ahead of me in line using one AND foodstamps. Because you don't know if they had it before they were laid off or lost a job due the economy, and are locked into a contract, and worried how they are going to make EVERY end meet. Do we now expect people to dress in rags, ruin their credit, spend $ they obviously don't have buying a cheaper looking phone just to satisfy your opinion of how things should be? And then on top of it, be knocked down some more all in the name of asking for help? I say get on a fucking boat, drive it into the ocean till you're out of gas and lose all communication, without an oar. Because THAT is what it feels like when you are in that position. Alone. In a boat. In the ocean. So, for ANYONE who wants to ask why west frankfort is the way it is... look at your own self and see how much you are worth. And if it's a lot... I'm sure you wouldn't mind sparing some for the less fortunate.I do. Because I know what it's like to be there. I HAVE walked a mile, and was looked down on just the same. I may not have much, but I donate whatever and whenever I can!$5 in gas could be the difference in getting to an interview or a job that just barely pays bills and heaven forbid there is a child involved and daycare costs. If there was 1 day that 5$ wasn't there... the next day they'd be getting up for the unemployment line instead of the job they got fired from.

I agree that Topix, instead of being used to discuss real solutions to our community "Problems" or to bring issues to light, it is used only to bash people. If you want to really see change, do you think bashing people is the way to do that. Sadly enough, people like to bash people, people like to lie and be hateful...it is just the way it is. I have tried starting more positive posts too but it never lasts very long. I remember a time when we would try to keep people's private lives private, especially when they were having troubles in their lives.....No one wants good news and if there is any they turn it into something else. Keep Positive "At War With Oursevles", your heart seems to be in the right place.....Only light can get rid of darkness and only Love can beat out Hate!

You don't know how many kids go hungry in this town. Many. Yes when I see folks lines up for food or clothes it breaks my heart. This town use to flurish. No more. Drugs, drinks and ppl who really don't care. Never was this way back then. Im ashamed of my town.

I know people that go into crosswalk that are not going hungry they are being greedy. Some I think are truly in need but not every person that goes in there should be in there. Simple way to solve the issue is to increase the requirements of said persons in "need" such as written proof of so called needs like lack of income ect. This area is going to the dogs. I recall how it was when I moved here years ago. Wasn't such a bad place. If the community would ban together perhaps it will help solve some of the issues.

You don't think crosswalk makes you bring proof of crap in? I do home health and have taken many clients for energy help, believe me they want EVERYTHING.

I'm speaking of the food pantry. they don't need any but an id card. I'm not talking at all about energy assistance. please reread my previous statement.

no all you have to have is an id. they should require proof of income and link balances. I know for a fact there is a girl from Benton who gets over $600 in food stamps her father pays all her costs including her gas and car insurance and she shops at crosswalk and take high dollar vacations to Arizona in the summer time all paid for by other people. she feeds off the system as many others do.

I agree with almost everthing that the OP said. Almost....

I understand what you say about the phone being purchased before a financial disaster. Point taken.

BUT, when I see them smoking and drinking coffee that they purchased at a gas station, that tells me they are getting their priorities screwed up.

I am all about giving someone a hand. I have been there. Lost my job, and had to get on WIC to help my newborn out. But I went out and took a job, one that only paid $8 an hr and got back on our feet. I did not continue to leech off the system. I do not, however, like giving handouts.....

Those "leeches", especially the ones that are second and third generation leeches, need to made responsible.
