I agree that this is a sad story. It's sad that he only got 5 years for taking the life of another.

I knew Zack and he was trouble from the beginning. His mother and grandmother are great people, but his family had no control over him. This is what happens when families break apart and parents cater to a child's every wish to the point where the child runs amok and has no structure.

Zack habitually used and sold drugs and alcohol and did so in his own home. His mother knew about this and even went so far as to have the police search the home for his stash. He was in and out of court many times prior to the shooting. Zack had no social skills and stole from his friends. He was always picking fights and getting his ass kicked. He dressed like a punk and cried like a little girl when he got caught doing something wrong.

The shooting took place near, very near my sister and her family, while they were home. This piece of shit could have easily hurt more innocent people.

The only thing I can hope for is that those five years will be miserable for him. I hate to say it, but i've seen many of his type come and go and you can mark my words, He will do his 5 years, most likely less than that. He will be released. He will be a burden on society. He will continue to commit crimes, sell dope and such, until such time that he hurts someone else and/or gets killed.

I'm sorry if his family reads this and is hurt by this, that's not my intent, but like I said, I've seen many Zacks before and odds are this will be the outcome. I hope I'm wrong... for everyone's sake!!!!

Yep...well guess what? His mother did read this. You act as though you know him. Obviously not. His name is ZACH not Zack. Yes, Zach had been on a rocky road. He had been in trouble. And I never recall calling the police to have his room searched. He made mistakes. Please dont judge him. I am sure you too live in a glass house. We all do! He was 17 years old. He was quiet and I can only recall one fight ever got in. I rarely hear anything bad about him. Most people have prayed for him and the Bertrands. You have no idea how hard this has been on all of us. You also, called him a piece of shit. That's wrong. I'll pray for you. I guess its easy to judge and draw your own conclusions. I am so sorry for what happened and so is he. You could never begin to understand. He is a good person with a big heart. It was an accident. He feels responsible and will live with this forever. They all were involved. One died, ones in prison and I have no idea where the others are. I only pray that you will never encounter a tradgety like this in your life time. I think before you write or speak you need to know all the facts. I dont know why I am wasting my time on this. You are just someone who wants to know but ....just don't.

Hey Zacks mom i wanted to say hi hoping you would get this.I forgot your name what is it i feel bad that i dont know.Wanted to say dont let people bother you what they say..You and i know it was a accident...and Zack is very sorry and will not continue to do bad when he gets out.He is a real good guy just a confused teenager at the time and i know he regrets getting the gun....Hope you are doing ok...i think of you all from time to time...i live in flordia now...i quite drugs for 9 months now...feels great...and i am very close to Jesus and God ...so Zack gets out in 2009 right?Hope he is doing well ,,,i feel so bad for him that he has to be in there that is just wrong to do to someone innocent...guess they had to make someone serve time for a life that had been tookin...i dropped out of school the year after it happened to much pressure on me and people condemmed me...what fools they are for doing that to me and Zack...guess we only know that we loved Edward very much and would do nothing to hurt him...or his family....well i hope you get this ...and write back if you would like.love you

How can you even think that Zach (not Zack) is a good kid. We see these things everyday in the news and watch how a troubled kids kills someone and claims it was a accident. Next you'll be saying that the 17 year old that killed the college student a few weeks ago was just a troubled kid that made so bad choices and it was just a accident. Someone must be held responsible for their actions and the loss of life. Zach's mom ...you make me sick for not making a man out of Zach and making him be responsible for his own actions. poeple can change but the problem is Zach did'nt.

I guess no one really won now did they? Peoples lives have changed forever. I dont think the public gets all of the details. Obviously Zach had some things he needed to address. I think all teenagers go through something. I know I did. I certianly wont throw any stones because I could have so easily been Zach. I dont think putting down Zachs mother is fair at all. She loves her child. I know a little more about this then the average reader. I know there are important details that prove this was an accident. If you compare this to other stories thats simply not right. I am telling everyone,..this could so be you!!! Things can accidentally happen. And if Zach wasn't a man when he was 17 I bet he is now. Zach is pulling time right now and will forever live with the memory of his friend. Please let this be now. Pray for all involved.

Randy C.

You have no idea what the truth is because you have only been told what the friends and family of Zach told you. This case should have gone to court and the truth would have come out. If you know the truth what is it? And yes I know a little bit more than the average reader too and alot more than you.

I knew Zach Linkous and his family and Edward's family. Make no mistake. Zach Linkous is a murderer. He got a stolen gun and shot Edward in the chest. He ran from the police, he tried to hide his gun. He got caught. I can understand how his mother and his family would stand by Zach, but no one should be fooled. Anyone who knows anything about guns knows that this was no accident. To say that Zach will have to live with this all his life is no comfort. He will have a life. Edward had his life stolen by a drug dealing thug. Mandi Carlson just makes me sick. She talks about Edward's murder like she and Zach are the victims. Let's not forget that she ran from the police too! What did she have to hide? Did she or Zach stay with their 'friend' while he bled to death? No, they left him to die. If there was any justice both Mandi and Zach would be locked up for life.

If you are going to pray for anyone, pray for the people in Christiansburg when this thug gets out of jail.

You know I wasn't around when this happened and I prbably shouldn't have read this just now but I believe it was an accident and people make accidents. Most people in this world make an accident when they are in a bad state of mind like the teenage years (selling and stuff) and it sucks for something this big to happen to open your eyes. For the people that are judging him.. what about "ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE US". I guess it's easier to judge people you see doing things but dont have a one on one with. A life was taken yes, and it's terrible to see, but i talked to ZACH recently and he always thinks or Edward. I can only hope that an accident will never happen to any of you because it will suck when people take it as a purpose thing and not an accident!

Well, it's so sad that most kids believe everything they hear.
Your friends know you loved Edward, and this was an accident. Forget the rest, they have no clue what they are talking about.
Time to move on people.

i know zach very well. I used to date him and and yes I believe it was an accident. His grandmom and mother are good people. He is to. He had some problems yes you doesn't. He may been in more trouble then one person in a life time. I believe he serve his time and know people should let him live his life the way he want it. I believe he changed and I think when he get out he will be a better person.

Can someone please define accident?

I wont judge anybody, but i will point out some intresting facts.

If this was an accident, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Why would Zach bring a gun to someones house?
2. Why would Zach bring a loaded gun to someones house?
3. At what point did he need to take the gun out and show people? If it was kept in his pants, why take it out?
4. After the gun fired, why did he flee the scene? Wouldnt a true friend who loves someone very much stick by his dying friend?
5. Why did Zach discard gun?

The biggest one is number 3.

Again, im not name-calling or judging. Only asking questions. Only seems fair.

However, i dont seem to understand how Mandi acts like they are the victims. They are still alive right? Whos the victim?

I do not know how this was an accident too. The gun was pulled out and shown, if both Zack and Mandi had thier hands on it when it went off, why did she get off with no time served in jail. She oly got a few day in juv-jail and then at home confidment. Mandi should have gotten a couple of years too. I saw her out after the shooting and you saw her acting like nothing happened. She wrote she quite drugs 9 months ago in her posting on Feb 8, 2008 and living in FLA. Yes I heard with a old man in his mid 40's when she was still underage. What kind of girl does this with nothing to hide. She ran away too from the sence while another friend stayed back and Edwards and waited for police. If you run you have something to hide.
