I have heard nothing but bad things about the director of the Chipley and Washington county pageants. It's ashame because these use to be really good scholarship opportunities for our young girls and now apparently they're just being cheated and used. I wish someone better would be able to take over!!

They are supposed to be sponsored by non-profit organizations, and she has ripped everyone off of so much money, and never even gave the sponsors the money they were promised!!! These girls were not supposed to pay a dime, and have ended up paying hundreds of dollars to this lady and have not seen a receipt or anything. When demanding they weren't going to fork out anymore money, she threatens to take away their titles! It's just absolutely rediculous and sad..

Boycott the pageants for a few years and see if there is an improvement. It's stupid, anyway, to crown a queen of an entire city/county when there were four contestants! Plus there are too many pageants that no one has ever heard of...why be Miss Washington County when you can be Miss Heart of Dixie Roses and Sue Bee Honey?

Let me tell you something, a lot of girls get thru college with all the money won in pageants, so i highly dont think they are stupid..

but the director of the Miss Chipley and Miss Washington county steals money from her queens, lies and is two-faced!

watch out for Mindy Cleveland.

Name one girl from around here that got a four-year degree with money earned from pageants. I know a Peanut Festival winner who, so far, hasn't earned her AA four years later. I call BS on this.

youll be waiting on here a long time if you expect any names of girls who have gone through college on beauty pageant money. a few hundred here and maybe a thousand for a biggie. theres no money in this if you take out the amount you spend for dresses and stuff. these mamas just want their girls riding in a parade

Actually, I know several girls from the panhandle who were Florida Watermelon Queens and made well over $10,000.00 during their reign, and that's not even including the scholarship money that they received. The members of the association who use the queen to their benefit throughout the year also gave her a clothing allowance, and paid for all of her wardrobe for appearances and competitions, as well manicures/pedicures and whatever she needed. All of her travel expenses (gas, oil change, plane tickets, hotel rooms, food, etc) were taken care of, none at her expense. So there are benefits to some pageants, as long as they are organized, directed, sponsored, and backed by people who actually care. If you dont like them, so be it, but they are beneficial.

$10,000 plus some scholarship money is a long way from paying for a four year degree with pageant money. And that's what was claimed.$10,000 will buy you a year at Chipola. I know that the ultimate around here is "Peanut" and I know a girl who won that not long ago. Yes, she had benefits that year but long range? No. And if Watermelon is so much more beneficial than Peanut, why isn't everyone competing to be in that pageant? If someone likes pageants, then be in them. But claiming you can get a degree by being in one of these local pageants is nuts. You can get your nails done all year and wear nice clothes and ride on cars in parades. Just don't expect the rest of us to buy into it, especially if you competed against only 3 or 4 girls for your "title."

My daughter loves pageants, not for the parades, not for the crown, but because she loves to dress up and play princess for the day. Please do not stereotype all girls who are in pageants, there will be bad in everything that you participate in...either do it or don't but stop trying to think up things to put on here!

I really enjoyed the pageant Saturday night. The talent was good, it was obvious the participants worked very hard, they were local kids most knew well and all were deserving of the outcome.

However, there were a few disturbing observations not only by me, but also by other parents in the audience.

The pageant director had personally coached the winner of one of the events. Next, the mother of the pageant director tallied the judges score sheets, and lastly it took 25 minutes from the time the judges handed over the sheets until the final tally was completed(a calculator was used).

This type of gross conflict of interest creates a disconnect between parents, participants, and individuals who sponsor these events. There is a great deal of money, time, and pride committed to such an occasion.

Could this lack of transparency risk participation in P-nut? Could all winners be disqualified for the above mentioned?

I cannot say, but if it is obvious to someone like myself, then how obvious is it to parents and former participants who understand the processes?

Advice! Transparency Transparency Transparency, removal of conflict of interest, and someone far removed, possibly business leader, school leader,
Womans Club member, Chamber member, etc. to tally scores at the same table with the judges once the pageant has ended.

Fear of not doing such could lead to less participation and greater distrust of the nature of pageantry in Washington County.

Pageants can be a great way for some girls to do things they never would have but these pageants around here, ESP Mindy Cleveland's are rigged and one big hoax/scandal to get your money!

I was there too for a different age division. I didn't know any of the girls in the Little Miss division and clearly picked the winner...and my pick was the little girl that won. So suck it up and move on!
