Salisbury Mall will be boarded up within the next ten years. It was built at a time when every town in NC with a population over 20K had a mall. So, in other words, the wanna-be regional mall opened as just a local mall and the locals in Salisbury had no reason to pledge allegiance to a lame 300,000 sq ft mall so they kept going to Charlotte and Winston-Salem to shop. Right after Salisbury Mall's debut, Wal-Mart mania started to flow out of AK and into the rest of the South, then soon thereafter, the nation. Target would later follow, making it o.k. for style-minded shoppers to shop at a discount store. Left behind were these small, irrelevant malls like Salisbury Mall and its twins in Statesville, Concord, Shelby, Hendersonville, etc. Why Belk's and Penny's are still there is beyond me. Even Chick-fil-A has now closed! When Belk's was downtown, that store was always full. You can't tell me that moving to the mall has improved their bottom line. Belk should take a bold move in Salisbury and move BACK downtown just to see if they can recapture some of their glory. I'll betcha a move back downtown would result in increased sales for Belk's. Same for Penny's. Since the mall opened, downtown Salisbury has gotten better, not worse, with good restaurants, shops and nightlife. Oh and parking is now free! We tried the mall thing and it clearly didn't work. Let's go back to what did: downtown Salisbury.

If you know the history of the mall, you may know that the Wallace family owned the property and also owned the property closer to the Interstate. They sold the land for the mall (knowing that there was bettter locations closer to the interstate). These properties are now the locations of the car dealers and the mall with Kohls and soon to be Belks. Of course the Salisbury Mall is all but dead and buried. It value on the tax books is over $13M with taxes of $160,000. per year. It will have a hard time surviving with Belks moving. LOCATION location Location..if it had been located in Wallace commons...next to I-85, it would have probably been successful.
Was that a personal decision by the Wallace family to utilize both areas or what?

If you have been to other malls, check out Oak Hollow in High Point. It has less than 50 percent of its stores rented and JC Penny has left as well as all anchor stores except Belks. They do have stores in the outlining lots that seem to be hanging on. They have rented spaces for dance studios, etc...It location is not very good and people in High Point seem to go to Greensboro and Hanes Mall in Winston Salem. Why has Hanes Mall been successful....location...locat ion...LOCATION.

The Salisbury Mall next to I-85 with strong anchor stores would have been successful. I am afraid the Wallace family made a decision that cost the county a chance to have a nice mall.

I visit the Mall and try to shop...Belks does not have the items like Belks in the Hanes Mall has so I go to Winston Salem. I look for other stores but the selection is very limited. Oh,yeah!! they do have a K & W and it seems to be doing very well so people will make the drive to eat in the area, but do you think people drive off the Interstate to do so? I doubt it and neither do they drive there to shop.

Can Salisbury Mall survive? When a 13 Million dollar property is sold for 2.5 million, what does that tell you?

If it is to be successful...an OUTLET MALL is the only chance.

If you want to give up $160,000.00 of tax dollars, move the school central offices and government offices there....NO NO I did not mean it...On the surface, it may sound good but the loss of the tax base would really have a very negative affect on the county.

I vote for an OUTLET MALL and utilize the locations around the mall for restaruants that seem to be successful in good malls.
