A very tragic accident that is solely caused by negligence of the parent/guardian.

It is very tragic, but at this point, how do we know if it was caused by negligence? It may very well have been, but don't assume anything yet. My heart goes out to the boy's family regardless.

It's neglagence fothe parents to have a 2 year old around a rock cliff period! Much less without a death grip on him the whole time!!

I was with the first responders at the park....... The child fell from the upper skyline trail down to the cliff trail way down below. A fall of that distance is unsurvivable unless fall is broken by something soft. Ive hiked both trails...... and they are many spots on trail where a child 2 years old could get underneath bottom of wooden railing and fall. Not saying thats how it happened , just saying it could happen if a parent wasnt watching for a few seconds. Like I said, Ive hiked these trails alot, and in my opinion, Children under 6 years old shouldnt be allowed up there !

I said in last post that I think Children under 6 shouldnt be allowed up there on the Chimney Rock trails....... But I also need to say, That it is Safe up on all trails as longs as its not kids under 6 and everyone else stays on the trails as instructed. There are railing at all dangerous areas where a person could be in danger of falling.

I agree but knowing that these people were from SC I believe were they told of the trail being so dangerous for children?

I've been going to CR for years and have yet to take my much older child on those trails. Mainly because I've seen Last of the Mahicans (lol) and I didn't like the view. You can also see a bit in the pics on the website. It looks to be a very dangerous trail above the waterfalls. One I've not have the urge to master and never with my children. jmo

Ditto.

Channel 7 is reporting that the coroner told them that the child broke free from it's mother and in the process of running away from her slipped under the barricade.

Officials at Chimney Rock are quiet. That's no surprise and personally I hope they are sweating it big time! From what I see, any curious child or adult of any age is at great danger there. I would not consider anything there a true barricade given the dangers involved.

For all we know, the mother did have a death grip on the child. I can just picture a 2 year old breaking free from that and I shudder. This poor family.:(

a lot of people blame the parents but 2 year olds are very curious and they like to dart away from their parents! so maybe it was nobody's fault, just an accident.

Easy for you to say don't you think, might be a good idea to take care of your own before passing judgement on others.

My only comment on this tragedy is that people coming to these places should be aware of dangers when climbing rocks and falls, so many tourists with no knowledge of the surroundings.

I feel deep sympathy for the parents of this child. However, please explain to me why Chimney Rock Park officials should need to stay mum or speak out at this time?

When you hike or climb, there is risk involved. I will admit I dont know hardly anything about the habits of a 2 year old, but I would consider one definitely NOT stable enough to hike on his/her own, anywhere!!

I can't imagine the horror this family is living through.

I feel this is a tourist trap and an accident like this waiting to happen. I feel their facilities and policies need some upgrading and have for some time now. I hardly believe this was a case of a two year old hiking on it's own. I feel I explained what I care to explain at this time in my post. No one need agree with me. I'm willing to wait for further information.
