— A Chillicothe man and his mother face felony charges after they allegedly beat the man’s girlfriend over the course of two days, leaving her bloodied and fearing for her life Monday, Chillicothe Police reported.

Officers made contact with the 19-year-old woman at a Western Avenue gas station shortly before 10 p.m. She was sitting on the parking lot curb and holding her head in her hands.

According to the incident report, the woman had blood in her hair, on her hands and dripping from her nose. The front of her shirt was soaked with blood and there was blood on her pants, too. Her eyes were bruised and swollen and she had cuts on her forehead, hands, arms and elbows. She wasn’t wearing any shoes and was shaking uncontrollably, the reporting officer noted.

The woman initially told the officer to get away from her because she feared her boyfriend would kill her if he saw her talking to police. Eventually, she opened up and alleged her live-in boyfriend and his mother had beaten her over the previous two days at their home on North High Street. Only on Monday night had she been able to get away, she said.

The woman said her boyfriend repeatedly punched her in the face, kicked and hit her all over her body and dragged her by her hair across the floor. She said he kicked her in her head and stomach and may have knocked her unconscious. The role his mother played in the incident is unclear from the report, but the boyfriend told police it was his mother who assaulted the victim because she was angry about the victim’s alleged drug use.

As a result of the alleged beatings by her boyfriend and his mother, the woman said she believed she had miscarried. She was treated at Adena Medical Center and later transported to Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University in Columbus because of a brain bleed, according to the report. Her condition at OSU was not available Tuesday.

Police went to the North High Street home, where the boyfriend’s mother immediately denied the accusations.

“I didn’t touch that girl,” she reportedly said.

The boyfriend said the victim came home drunk Monday and fell several times, hitting her face on the floor, the report states.

When an officer pointed out his knuckles were red and swollen, the boyfriend reportedly said,“There’s nothing wrong with my hands. I wouldn’t hit her. I love her.”

After being handcuffed, the boyfriend’s mother reportedly said she would tell police what really happened if they didn’t take her to jail. She said her son had beaten his girlfriend over the previous five days, to the point she was unconscious, and she feared for the woman’s life, but was too scared to call police.

The boyfriend continued to deny that he hit the woman and denied knowing she was pregnant, according to the report. He said he’d injured his knuckles in a fight with an unknown suspect several weeks ago.

Joshua A. Gossman, 26, is charged with felonious assault and felony domestic violence, as is his mother, Wanda L. Spencer, 47. Both have previous convictions for domestic violence, according to the report.

Gossman and his girlfriend were the subjects of another incident Friday. Police were advised Gossman had been chasing her down West Fourth Street. At the time, her left eye was black and swollen.

Gossman told police that his mother caught her smoking crack in the bathroom and they got into a confrontation, according to Monday's incident report.

The victim was hesitant to talk with police about the incident and was reportedly uncooperative regarding how she obtained the black eye. Her unwillingness to cooperate resulted in no assault charges being filed at the time, according to the Friday incident report.

After police found there was an active warrant for her arrest for failure to appear on a charge of underage possession of alcohol, she was taken into custody Friday and taken to the jail.

After reading this, then get to the end and then see they arrested her for failure to appear for a underage drinking ticket. The Chillicothe Police are really something. Good work getting that poor girl off the streets and locked up. Good God how do they sleep at night?

Shame on them. That's the kind of protection we have come to expect from our law enforcement. This has wrong all over it.

I'm wondering if they got pissedoff because she wouldn't cooperate with them on the assault charges, so they arrested her. Why didn't they use their discretion. They could have showed some compassion!!

Did you ever think that the police arresting her was a way to get her the Hell out of the situation? What does she do...she goes back. Why be so down on the police? They do what they can. If you had any clue how hard the job is you would not think this way.

If they held her there against her will to continue the beatings... I would think some kid napping charges would be filed also on both him as well as his mother.

And possible murder charges if they caused her to lose the baby.

The mom sure did sell out her son to save her ass. She fell...Mmmm yeah that is original! They are back out on the streets already. They both should of had at least $50.000 dollar cash bonds on them, not to mention a few more charges that would have made a higher bond..that would have kept them in jail. That way the girl would not have been beat up on Friday. Leaving the police no choice but to arrest her for her own good.
You see if they had done their jobs right the first time: A: She would have not gotten the black eye, because they had the right charges filed and a huge bond. B: If the warrant was active why didn't they catch it Monday?

I'll tell you why I'm so down on the police! They are idiots plain and simpletons. That job is far from hard and they all let it go to their heads. They think they are above the law.(BIRD]

He try to blame it on his mom then she rats him out! They both beat this girl to unconsciousness. This sounds like a lovely family with priors for this kind of behavior! Mom was made cause she didn't share that crack with her.

If the girl had an active warrant, what was the Officers supposed to do? They have no choice but to arrest her. Does she deserve special priviledges because she was beaten? She made her choice not to appear in court on those charges before she was injured. I don't think I know her, but I do know who Gossman and Spencer are, and he is a very disturbed young man, really angry acting. He and his Mother are always fighting in public. I hope they get the proper punishment for this and both of them off the streets. Sadly, they will probably all be back together soon.

I guess I misread the article. I thought the incident happened Friday and then she was arrested. Still, if only she would have filed charges then, it may have saved her from the beatings later. But she went back then, and she will probably go back now. Hopefully there is a friend or family member to help her out and help get her away from the situation.

No "man" would ever treat a woman in such a way, the facts speak for themselves.
He beats on a pregnant woman to the point that she miscarries and has bleeding on the brain and he still lives with "mommy".
IMHO that is not a man, it is a little boy that will never grow up.
He needs a dose of old fashioned thump therapy with his ribs kicked in, it would definitely change his point of view.

i was the cashier working when she came in for help, it was by far the scariest thing i have ever witnessed.... Her and her boyfriend were regular customers and she was always coming in with bruises, and i never thought anything of it until this happened.. i dont care what she did, she didn't deserve that... No one deserves that.

Maybe, she missed her under age drinking case, because her wonderful boyfriend, and his wholesome mother, gave the alcohol to her...Who knows what this girl lived through?...Pray for her...for her recovery from all of this...

Was she pregnant? I believe on the first report on WKKJ it was said she thought she may have miscarried but was given a test at the hospital that said she had not been pregnant. I am confused about that because I haven't seen it again in the news. This guy also has been known to beat on his Mother..they are both freaks..Mother and son. I am usually not the type person that condones violence, but I would buy a ticket to see him AND his Mother get a well deserved ass thumping if they did this.
