Stoner, the Stanford professor, said Putin may wait for Ukraine's new government and its Western backers to grow unpopular as they did after the country's 2004 Orange Revolution.

"The Russian idea of control is stepping back, watching what others do and then moving at the right time," she said. "We don't do that."

Hill, the author of a book about Putin, said the former Russian intelligence official has outmaneuvered Western leaders by waiting for the right moment and then acting forcefully when he sensed his adversaries were off-balance. She said Putin's grip on power was firm and Moscow would be a major player in regional dynamics from Europe to the Middle East for years to come.

"You can't ignore Russia," Hills said. "We just have to get smarter at playing this game."

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/26/us-...

Stoner called that system "Putinism" and described it as a complex mix of de facto authoritarianism at home and anti-American obstructionism abroad. It is by no means a Soviet-scale threat to the United States. But experts describe it as a controlling, culturally conservative system that Putin actively promotes to counter what he sees as a degenerate and decadent West.

"They're definitely setting themselves up in opposition to the United States," said Fiona Hill, an expert on Putin at the Brookings Institution in Washington. "Being the leaders of a conservative coalition of countries who oppose gay rights and gay marriage and those who want to see less of a role for the church, more of a secular society."

and.....obama wants to gut the military. Putin seems to really enjoy obama being potus.

It is amazing that the same "THE A-NUS TOUCH" who not too long ago was bad mouthing President OBAMA for having drawn a line in the sand in Syria, is now slandering the President of the United States for not having drawn a line in the sand in the Ukraine.

Me thinks that our "THE A-NUS TOUCH" let his brains slip down his a-nus.

It is obvious that our potus cannot handle Putin.
It is time for the European Union to step up to the plate.
If not, Putin will control their natural gas supplies, and that is where the real trouble begins.
The Russia-EU Gas Relationship: A partnership of necessity

Putin is only poking and jabbing around for weakness right now. The U.S. is broke and our leader is incompetent in world affairs.
It is in the best interests of the E.U. to stand up to the bully.

Putin is following bush the W's example to a T when W hoodwinked an uninformed and skittish American Citizenry and broke every law in the book by invading Iraq without international approval.

Given enough rope Putin will also end up hanging himself and destroy Russia's economy just as bush the W nearly wiped out our own economy.

Obama’s weakness emboldens Putin
When President Obama declared Friday that “there will be costs” for any Russian intervention in Ukraine, you could hear the laughter emanating from the Kremlin — followed by the sound of Russian military vehicles roaring into Crimea and seizing control of the peninsula.

“Costs?” Vladimir Putin must have thought. Just like the “costs” Obama imposed on the Assad regime in Syria?

Obama did nothing.

It was one of the most embarrassing and emasculating episodes in the history of U.S. foreign policy.

In the wake of this debacle, Obama is now warning Putin — the man who saved him from his promise to impose costs on Assad — that he’s going to impose costs on Putin for his intervention in Ukraine? Did he really expect Putin to take him seriously?

Putin calculates that he can do what he wants in Ukraine and the whole unpleasantness will blow over in a few months.

Off topic... but, just gotta refute the left winged lies!

The Democrats’ Support for Bush’s War
The claim by Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) and other Democratic leaders unconditional funding was necessary to “support the troops” and to “not leave them in harm’s way” is a lie. If they really supported the troops and wanted them out of harm’s way, they would have passed legislation that would bring them home. The Democrats had other priorities, however.

Pelosi claimed that they had to provide unconditional funding for President Bush’s war in Iraq because they could not get enough Republican support to achieve the two-thirds majority necessary to override a presidential veto. However, they did not need a two-thirds majority to stop funding the war. All they needed to do was to refuse to pass any unconditional funding for the war and instead pass a funding measure that allocated money for the sole purpose of facilitating a safe and orderly withdrawal from Iraq, or, at the very least, a funding measure that set a strict deadline for the withdrawal of troops.

As Speaker, Pelosi could have set the legislative agenda and not allowed any funding bill to come to a vote unless it had such provisions. And, if Bush refused to sign it, he would have been the one to put the troops in harm’s way, not Congress.

When JFK looked weak to Nikita Khrushchev, we got the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1963. When Jimmy Carter bear-hugged Brezhnev, we got the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. When Bill Clinton failed to stop Bin Laden for seven whole years, we got 9/11/01 in New York City.

And when Obama clowned it up for the world, alienating our allies and bowing down to our deadly enemies, we got this week’s Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

And that’s only the beginning. Just you watch.

Unlike conservative chicken hawks, President OBAMA understands the meaning of "Speak softly and carry a big stick" and does not seem to worry too much about "who gets the credit" nor does he engage in…

"Cowboy diplomacy" which ends up hurting the Nation over the long run.

Right!

The Soviets ended up pulling their missiles out of Cuba in a hurry, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was the Soviets undoing, the republicans screamed bloody murder when Clinton attacked Bin Ladin and bush the W waited till after we got 911 to start a private war of his own.

The so called Russian invasion of Ukraine will prove to be Putins own Waterloo. Just watch.

Russia's economy relies heavily upon crude oil exports.....and now crude oil prices are spiking thereby HELPING RUSSIA/Putin.

How can out gurlish potus give Putin a black eye??

If President Obama’s tired of being humiliated by Russia’s Vladimir Putin, he has at least one way to get his mojo back: APPROVE THE KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE.

Putin has slapped Obama for months, granting asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden, backing Syria’s murderous regime and most recently exploiting the administration’s confused response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons to effectively seize control of US policy, at least for now.
In addition, Europe gets 34% of its natural gas supplies from Russia. The world/Europe is paying higher prices for oil/gas thereby helping finance Putin's takeover of the Ukraine.

Approving Keystone right now would be a win, win, win for America and our free world partners.

jfk caused the Cuban missile crisis. Jfk was a weak minded druggie, just as obama is a weak minded druggie. At the June 1961 meeting with khrushchev, kennedy showed he was weak and a p_ssy, just as obama is. Because of kenedys weakness, two months after that meeting in august 1961 Khrushcheve started building the Belin wall. Yes the Berlin Wall was built because of kennedy weakness. Then in Oct 1962 khruscheve moved missiles into cuba........it was all because kennedy was weak. obama's weakness will cause more death and pain around this world than what you could ever imagine blaming on President George Walker Bush.

It already has...

Remember these people who dogged Bush's every waking moment? Not a peep out of them since Obama took over and raised the casualty rate by 500%
“The average monthly casualty rate for U.S. military forces serving in Afghanistan has increased 5-fold since President Barack Obama was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2009.

1,540 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan since Oct. 7, 2001, when U.S. forces began fighting in that country to oust the Taliban regime that had been harboring al Qaeda and to track down and capture or kill al Qaeda terrorists.

During the Bush presidency, which ended on Jan. 20, 2009 with the inauguration of President Obama, U.S. troops were present in Afghanistan for 87.4 months and suffered 570 casualties—a rate of 6.5 deaths per month.During the Obama presidency, through today, U.S. troops have been present in Afghanistan for 29.1 months and have suffered 970 casualties—a rate of 33.3 deaths per month.

The 970 U.S. casualties that have occurred while President Obama has been commander in chief equal 63 percent–or almost two-thirds—of all U.S. casualties that have taken place in the nearly-ten-year-long war.

889 of the 970 U.S. casualties in Afghanistan that have occurred during the Obama presidency—or about 92 percent—have been combat-related casualties. During Obama’s presidency, U.S. troops have given their lives in the service of their country in Afghanistan at an average rate of more than one per day.” source – CNS News
