A recent chemical spill in West Virginia polluted the water of 300,000 people. The water is unsafe for any purpose but toilets.

The company responsible was under no government oversight at all.

Don't worry SOLUTION because "THE GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM" types like SAM assure us that the market place will make certain such spills never occur again...

GRANDPA, this chemical spill incident reminded me of an earlier post I made to Sam regarding his ultra-libertarian view that we should de-regulate all companies and let 'free-enterprise' solve all of our problems.

I had suggested a scenario where a factory polluted a town's stream because of no regulations. Sam had replied that the townspeople could simply not buy the factory's products, and that would solve everything. He finally said that the people could sue the factory owner and that would be the solution. I laughingly called this solution the 'United States of Law Suits'.

My example had to do with a town 100 years ago. Here we have the exact same theme, but in the present day. No regulations-- and the company, ironically named Freedom Industries'-- lets thousands of gallons of chemicals pour into the river.

The chemicals are for cleaning coal, so I don't see how the citizens can exact penance by not buying the product. They don't buy the product, coal producers buy it.

So now let's see how many law suits pop up. How about the 300,000 people who couldn't wash their clothes and dishes, couldn't bathe or brush their teeth, or drink the water for a week. As inconvenient as this was to each family, they probably can't afford to sue, and probably wouldn't get much compensation if they did sue.

Luckily, the toxicity wasn't so strong as to kill a lot of people, in this case. But if it had killed people, sure, their families could sue-- but it wouldn't bring back their dead loved ones.

And regarding 'free-enterprise'-- the hundreds of restaurants, motels, and other businesses that couldn't open for a week sure didn't feel so free.

Maybe Sammy will come out and play if someone tells him that there will be new regulations because of the spill...

UPDATE:

Freedom Industries, the chemical company that caused the spill, just filed for bankruptcy. So it looks like lawsuits aren't going to work either.

That's what can happen with no regulations. And as the polluted water continues down the river more people are being affected-- with absolutely no recourse.

I guess the dreaded government is going to have to kick-in and help these hundreds of thousands of people. Unless the repubs decide that they can't afford to help.

In typical fashion, lil teepee knows nothing about the politics of the owners of the company, how it happened, nor does he have a way to help.
Just nastiness and trouble from lil teepee the sheit disturber.
What a tragedy.

President Obama is sending FEMA to the rescue. Maybe we taxpayers shouldn't be paying for this disaster.

After all, W. Virginia Joe Manchin hates the EPA, FEMA, and those other meddlesome agencies.

But he's a bit of a hypocrite-- he took over one million from the EPA for storm relief in 2013. And he's not refusing the FEMA help now.
