Is anyone aware of the coal mining lease that was just granted by the State Mental Health Trust to Full Metal Minerals to mine 20,000 ares around Chickaloon? Mind you, this isn't a deep, hard rock type of mine, but rather open pit mining, that requires clear cutting and bulldozing the land. I am very alarmed by this, and am very worried that our quality of life in Chickaloon will be significantly decreased by this. What are people doing to fight this??

This is all too true... a Canadian mining company has bought subsurface rights to 34 square miles of land which abuts all of our private properties, with no buffers. The Chickaloon Community Council ( www.geocities.com/chickalooncommunitycouncil ) has passed a Resolution against the permit, and a new non-profit has sprung up. See the Castle Mountain Coalition website at www.castlemountaincoalition.org .
There is a public hearing in Chickaloon on February 7th. Public comment starts at 8 p.m. You can get more information about the permit application and the DNR's preliminary decision on either website.

I am against any type of mining. There is nothing good for the folks and the enviroment surrounding the mining area. It has torn our country up in the lower 48 and now we are wanting to finish off the last state alive. No to mining

Good News! We just found out that the partnership between Afognak Native Corporation and Full Metal Minerals is off. Afognak was deciding whether to "buy in" for 80% in the Chickaloon coal project- for a $2,000,000 pricetag. Now the coal company will probably have to delay the drilling until they can find another partner- or maybe they'll call off the project all together. Meanwhile Chickaloon residents are starting to put together a plan for RENEWABLE energy development that won't destroy our community and tourism-based economy.

So there won't be any coal exploration in Chickaloon this time around. The mining company returned the leases back to the Mental Health Trust Land Office on April 25th! Let's keep doing what we can to keep the coal in the ground and out of our bodies...
