Na, VO5 is now Oconner's. VO5 was Jim & Gus's, Russ' Ranch, Harry's . Snack Shack was east, closer to Central. It was small.

Jim & Gus's brought 'Gyros' to the area, long before we even knew what it was. One day they were so busy, they ran out of food. Anyone guess why?

Ah, Lupi's Pizza. I still think about that. That was the best. Remember when we had Kentucky Fried Chicken where Waldo's is now? Drumbstix Chicken on 111th and then on Ridgeland. They also had real Lake Perch. Wasn't Fayva ( sp?) shoe store a Record Cassette 8-track Music Store? And Ben Franklin's and Colonial Restaurant. Bristow's Barber Shop. My brother got his hair cut there and my Dad didn't think it was short enough ( He was rebelling in the 70's)and he made him go back for a free haircut or he was to get his $1 back. He cut it shorter for free! How about Vickies's? Most of al i miss Verns.

Well i will tell you about the day Jim & Gus's ran out of food. It was on the day of Mayor Richard Daley's funeral.( May 1902- Dec 20, 1976). They lined the streets and 111th was packed 10 deep as far west as almost Verns and East well past Tokars. He was buried in the Family Plot, just Left of the main gate. 1st to go were the Hot dogs followed by Hamburgers. Beef, Steak Sandwiches and Italian Sausage. Polish were not a favorite but it was better than nothing, they were all gone too. At the end when they were forced to close they only had Grill Cheese , Orange Pop and Coffee black...only if you had a cup.

I went into Winchester WalMart one Friday night a few months back... and the assistant store mgr stopped me as I was leaving and accused me of stealing a ring (one of the $6.88 specials) THAT I HAD BOUGHT THERE ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE. Needless to say I was humiliated and embarrassed. What made it worse was that there was a local county cop who took great pleasure in taunting me, telling me I would be banned from all WalMarts and that I should go to The dollar tree instead. I lost the case. They admitted they had NO SECURITY CAMERAS in the area where I supposedly ripped a PLASTIC TAG off this cheap ring (impossible to do, I'm not strong enough plus the pulling would have destroyed the ring; you have to CUT it off; I know this because I'd bought at least a dozen similar rings from them in previous months and years). I had a friend testify on my behalf that he'd seen me wear the ring several days before that night, but no dice. Rodger Bean did NOTHING to defend me, and so now I have a misdemeanor charge on my record, have to do community service, anger management (the rent-a-cop claimed I cursed him; now that is ONE thing I know better than to do!!) and shoplifting seminar (wonder if they teach you how to or how NOT to??). I am also banned from all WalMarts in my county. I am SO ANGRY. This one store is an example of the WORST of WalMart: lousy customer service, dirty store, kids playing basketball in the toy aisles, cashiers who flirt with guys instead of getting orders rung up, etc etc etc. Ole Sam Walton must be SPINNING in his grave. I will NEVER set foot in a WalMart again, ANYWHERE, just on general principle. But there will be plenty others to replace me, so I'm sure they won't miss me. They are awful to shop at, awful to work for, and a blight on the community's economic standing. I have heard horror stories from former employees about security personnel smuggling items out of the store to "fence", as well as other atrocities. Can't blame them; they make SQUAT for salary. The Dollar Tree is cleaner, nicer and better to shop at, and the prices are comparable to WalMart. Plus, they are NOT owned by the French, as others have pointed out as well. Hell, KMart is nicer anymore than WalMarts!! I am a middle-aged white female, not a punk kid or a welfare case. I was just there for something to do while waiting for my husband to come home from work. This was the LAST thing I ever expected to happen to me there. NEVER AGAIN. Beware going in late on Friday nights; the security personnel are bored and will pinpoint you for nothing better to do in order to harass you, even if they can't arrest you. J. Edgar Hoover, the SS, and the KGB are only slightly ahead of WalMart in harassment techniques.

correct, it was where the animal hospital is now. and yes it was owned by the gallos. Oh what I wouldn't give to have another of their steak sandwiches. I wish we could get hold of the recipe for the "mustard" and the supplier of the steaks (which were actually more like a steak burger.

It wasn't me but i was there when; the rickety flimsy back door of the Snack Shack could be pulled open & you could reach in and grab chips and stuff. OK, cigs too. The little place where Bozo's Hotdogs was.. was also a good little corner breakfast place.
