This is obviously not a black and white issue, it is an economic issue. I live in the area (Lincoln & Armitage) and can vouch for the occasional robbery. My neighbor was robbed in his apartment a few weeks ago. The problem exists because our city, in it's infinite wisdom, insists that all neighborhoods need to include subsidized houseing and be smaller versions of the larger demographic. The result is the haves living next door to the have nots, and guess who gets robbed.

While LP Trixy's comments are very immature and short sighted, she has a right to live in a place where she feels safe. Just because these things happen in other parts of the city doesn't mean she should feel badly for not wanting them to happen near her.

The site was www.chicagocime.org but I can't see to get it to open up.

Another one I found is http://gis.chicagopolice.org/CLEARMap/startPa...

I said minority because I guess I was trying to be more PC but in all of those instances my friends were robbed by males of a darker skin color.

I lived in the heart of the Sheffield neighborhood (now referred to by the realty types and new transplants as "DePaul") for 4 years and the unreported (as in not reported in the news) crime in that area is unbelievable. There are a LOT of assaults, armed robberies and burglaries occurring over there because that area is a magnet for lowlife criminals.
The reason for this has everything to do with the stupidity (for lack of a better term) of guys and gals like LP Trixie who think they're living in some type of faux-urban Winnetka. They refuse to acknowledge there is danger lurking even in oh-so-precious Lincoln Park. Walking around drunk at night alone talking on your cell phone on a dimly lit street (I saw countless young men and women doing this over the years) sends a signal to the criminals that the pickins is ripe.
Wake up people, it may be lily white and awful pretty but its still the city.
I could not agree more. I lived in that area and then moved to Old Town. Everywhere I went something seemed to happen. When I first moved to Lakeview around Diversey and Halsted. The day before I moved in a girl was tackled and raped in the alley about a block from my apt. Then I moved to Lincoln Park and my friends get held up at gun point across the street. Then Old Town and my roommate gets held up at knifepoint a few doors down. I kept moving to more expensive neighborhoods and still the same old crap. The truth is like you pointed out that you can never let your guard down. I refused to let any of my female friends walk to get a cab or to the train alone. You just never know.

I was held up by two teens last May 2006, right before Memorial Day in Bucktown behind my house in the alley in broad daylight. The teens first ran by me and when they saw that I was alone they pounced. They only got my wallet which had my only two credit cards. I got one canceled and then I had to deal with the police. After 1/2 hour filling out the police report and answering the same questions over and over as if they suspected me of something, I was able to cancel my other card. In the meantime someone ran up almost $500 at 5 different north side gas stations. That's a lot of gas in a short period of time. This had to be an organized operation using kids as the gunmen while their handlers sat in a car or cars somewhere to pick them up and whisk them away.

I tried to give the police the exact gas stations and times these people used the card but they weren't interested. The people driving these cars are the real culprits. Gas stations make it so easy to commit credit card fraud yet they have no way of identifying the perps that use stolen cards? If the police went after the handlers of these kids by investigating video evidence from the gas stations the perps use with the stolen cards they could crack down on these holdups significantly.

Meanwhile, that summer of 2006, two people in the Bucktown neighborhood that I know of got held up by the same kids using the same MO. I'm sure there were many many more people that I don't know who fell victims to this organized operation that befell our neighborhood.

My bottom line: The way to really crack down on these operations is to target the gas stations these perps use right after a hold up. All gas stations should have their pumps monitored with video. The CC companies can almost find out where these cards are being used in real time. If communications were set up properly with the CC companies, a squad car could literally pull up and arrest the perp while he had the gas nozzle in the tank. The person I talked to at my CC company told me that the police does not cooperate with them whatsoever so she gave me all the info verbally over the phone.

It's one thing to catch a bunch of kids doing the dirty work, the handlers of these kids never seem to get caught. They remain free to recruit other idiot kids into their operations. The CPD really needs to root out and prosecute the handlers.

Taxpayer,

I agree. I live in Lincoln Park and have been there for the past three years. I honestly don't think that LP is any different from Old Town, Wrigley, etc.. LP has the reputation of being this high-class, low crime area for crimes such as robbery. For these criminals who are out and about trolling the streets looking for someone to rob, where do you think they would go? If I were out robbing people and being a low-life, the first place i would go is a neighborhood such as LP where people walk around thinking they are above everyone else, simply because they live in a certain neighborhood. Plus they probably got a pocketful of money too! Bottom line is no neighborhood in a major city such as Chicago is rid of low-life criminals like these guys here.

Thats B.s. Thats the CC company exscuse for the high rates they charge.

Having personally handled hundreds of robberies I can tell you the CC companies will not give out the information. They need to be contacted by the card holder who must authorize them to give out this informaton.

The problem is that once the stolen card is used the Cc company will reimburse the cardholder thus making the Cc company the victim of the money lost.

cc companies do not wish to be part of the case against the offenders so they eat the charge and raise the rates

If you want to take on the burden of these criminals because you share the same skin color, that's on you. You are speaking for yourself. These criminals actions do not reflect negatively on me and do not embarrass me one bit.
