A school bus driver admitted to authorities that he drove children to school after downing shots of whiskey - and later drank a six-pack of beer before causing a chain-reaction crash that killed one and injured eight, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Witnesses estimated that the bus driven by Jerry Moncrease was speeding as fast as 70 m.p.h. when it slammed into a sport-utility vehicle at a South Side intersection Monday.

He had a blood alcohol level of .225, nearly three times the legal limit, Assistant State's Atty. Bonnie Greenstein said at a hearing. Read more
