I drove from the office on north Michigan Ave to Portage Park, picked up some groceries and dog food at Jewel, stopped at Home Depot and got a few books at the library in 1:45 minutes in my 3 year old Navigator. It too is nice not to be affected by the actions of others on public transportation.
Cost of Gas: about $5 for the errands.
Time spent with my family instead of multiple trips on Public Transportation: Priceless
You forgot to mention paying $30 for parking downtown.

A 61-year-old man runs across rush-hour traffic on the Dan Ryan and leaps over a fence?

Amen. The Randolph and Wabash Station was seven people deep and there was no Green Line train(so lots of riff raff at the station) and the Brown Line Trains were so full you couldn't get on them. I finally took the Blue Line to the Western Station and took the bus the rest of the way home to the North Side. Its appalling that one losers death causes the whole sytem to be backed up for hours. Why are there no alternative plans in place when something like this happens? This my friends is called POOR PLANNING and Huberman and his minions should be fired.
Give Huberman a break....maybe he'll learn from this.

I learned from these sorts of events to check the Customer Alerts DAILY before getting on the CTA, to or from work. A "Red Line Incident" I did not expect to mean "Massive delays across the whole spectrum." I agree with you that Huberman isn't to blame, but someone is.

What gets me is the way people act when the trains are down, the busses are loaded and no cabs can be found, as if life is over because they cannot get home ASAP. How about some civility people.
And the bum that died got what he deserved.
Well chicken choker, that didn't sound very civil to me!

This is a prime example of why the Olympics should NOT come to Chicago. CTA's service is already horrible, throw an accident in and what do you get...paying customers walking 8 blocks in the humidity and heat just to pay to get on another crowded train. CTA,Major Daley and this cross walk sting !!!
