It matters not whether he is the highest paid - he is overpaid, over reated and WAY in over his head. It appears the Board of Education is in the same boat.

Board of Education, if do not believe this, bring on a bond issue. After this insane action, such an election would be a resounding no!

And No, you cannot undo the harm you have done!

Most of elk city's financial issues stem from Merritt being to close and taking badly need funds from our district. Instead of bitching about salaries bitch about boundaries with the budget the school system has 10000 a year makes very little impact. We need to redistrict to bring more money in we are land locked buy boundaries set up many many years ago. Look at the money that the Merritt district is getting just from drilling close to town. Everyone is bitching about the wrong thing. Expand the district.

Regardless of the Merritt aspects of which you speak, a school board with any sense DOES NOT pull crap like they just pulled by granting a $10,000 raise after all the moaning and groaning that has transpired this school year.

They couldn't have picked a worse time and their actions can easyly be construed as thumbing their collective noses at the taxpayers and school employees.

No matter how you wish to spin it, it was foolish! Now the chances of passing a school bond, regardless of need, are nil.

He is not the highest paid in western OK. In 2010 Hammon made $115,000 and Cheyenne made $108,000 you know they got raises the last two years. Their $$ makes Elk City look like a slum. http://blog.newsok.com/educationstation/files...
Pardon me. I stand corrected. Do you think he does a better job than Clinton and Weatherford? Our teachers are the ones who actually do the work with our children. He's still way overpaid for what he does. He whines constantly about state budget cuts, yet feels just fine taking a raise. You don't think the money would be better utilized elsewhere? You don't think this is a bad move when he's asking us to give him money to build new schools? Really? I can't wait to vote new people into all of the board seats!

How about send the kids in those districts to the school they are zoned for? Then we wouldn't have overcrowding!$10,000 is nothing? Really?

Whine about money, whine about State report card, while about money - if he is doing the bidding of the School Board, the School Board is The Whiner in Chief!

You folks crapped in your own mess kit on this deal. Bring on a bond issue - can't wait to show my displeasure with the way things are, and, yes, there is carryover from the Roper years. He is the one that set up the guy that is in way over his head.

I agree with you. I think all of these Superintendents make too much money. Teachers are the life blood of education. But they are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to compensation. Truth be know the school board could do the job of Superintendent and Principals could fill in the administrative gaps. Another point coaches should be volunteers. Money should be spent on education not coaches and ex-coach administrators.

I disagree with you on painting all ex-coaches with a broad brush. You are right to an extent, but some of the very best administrators I know of went through the coaching ranks. Anyone who has coached and carried a full or nearly full class load has earned their stripes and then some. Likewise, just because you coached doesn't assure you will be a good administrator just like if you had nothing to do with sports doesn't make you a good candidate for administration. It depends totally on the individual, just like in any walk of life.

Furthermore, kids learn as much, if not more, about life through sports as they do in the classroom. Give me a graduate that played sports and earned decent grades over the kid with high grades who never played sports in any field of endeavor anytime.

Having said all of that, the Elk City School Board did the District no good whatsoever with their recent raise in salary for the less than super superintendent. Somone posted he has a special ed background. Let me add that I am not surprised.

They do a good job, and for the most part, out do the other paper. Didn't see the guns at school story in the Elk Citian. That too was an important story. Perhaps I missed it.

Wonder what ever happened with that. Swept under the rug in the school offices?

Someone else commented about the Elk Citian printing ALL the news, and I merely was responding to that comment. Hope your day wasn't ruined!

The Board of Education has essentially ruined any chances for a needed bond issue to pass in the near future(2-3 years). For your sake i will through in the word superintendent to appease your critical eye!

I keep reading how no one will support a bond. Who does that help? If it is intended to send a message, it is to the detriment of the kids.

If it gets turned down again, you can thank the school board! It's in their hands. Apparently the school bond vote is the only way we have a say so in our school system. The board sure doesn't ask our opinion about anything, nor do they listen to what we say at the meetings!

We had a professional day yesterday and Mr. Wood usually make an appearance at those things. We didn't see him yesterday. I don't think it's a coincidence.

You may not see much of him for the duration of the school year! The School Board Shot itself in the foot with the raise, deserved or not (likely not)!
