How is it that Elk City Schools allegedly is broke but can increase the schools superintendent salary by $10,000.

Yeah, that 10k a year could go towards books, renovations, and 100 other things I'm sure.

They announced his pay raise the same day new taxes went into effect and the teachers took a pay cut. Now he is one of the highest paid supers around while the base teaching pay is not. How does someone get a raise like that for doing a mediocre (at the very best) job?

Glad someone feels the same. You go in to talk to him and his excuse is always "no money." His raise would go a long ways in updating the terrible technology status of at least one school, raise the pay for subs so more subs can be found, and allow for so many simple needs. Between he and his wife that have to be taking at least 150K out of this school system. But, the main kicker on this subject ... that is no way to even think he can pass a school bond. If that is how the School Board and Administration set priorities for use of money, there will never be a school bond pass with that way of being stewards of ECPS money. Let's see what happens with the other two at the Board Office. And, just think, if by some miracle the teachers get a raise from the state, Wood gets that, too!

See what I mean by lack of common sense. It is totally absent from the Elk City School District at the upper levels. School Board, Superintendant, etc., talk about whole Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.

I've been accused on another thread of hating the school, but that is the furthest thing from the truth there is. I simply expect The Gang to use some common sense in their decisions, but might as well spit in one hand and hope in the other to see which hand fills up first.

Political acumen? Another huge area The Gang is sorely lacking in. I tell you, school patrons and taxpayers, you couldn't make up shit like the shit that goes on at the top levels of the Elk City School District.

Whine, whine, whine about lack of funds to do this, to do that, and give the man at the top a $10,000 pay raise. Must be for that bond issue that was DOA a few years ago due to dreaming it up without public input and trying to ram it down the community's throat.

I would love to see a teacher strike and let him try to earn his raise then.

did you know that the substitute teachers make $8 an hour in elk city?? and for some reason -- the local schools have a hard time finding subs.

I am so discouraged at the actions of this school system .. I know many teachers who deserve so much more, than even the superintendent. I am appalled at the things they do.. My faith in this system is none. Which is exactly why I chose to homeschool my kids and let another district, where they actually care about the children, teachers and parents, reap the benefits. I pay nothing for school supplies as everything is supplied down to sand, to use for art and science projects for my 1st grader. I have teachers who are dedicated to helping my student learn and thrive and who work with me to give my kids the best education possible. Yes it is a little more work for me but I was working just as hard and spending more money paying for uniforms, supplies my kids didn't use, or paying for supplies for the class because the teacher needed them but couldn't get the money for it from the district, because they couldn't afford $50 for art supplies, or books, or whatever it's been over the years. This is just one more reason parents, teacher, the people in this community need to stand up and do what's right. It's sad to see it going the other direction..

I am so grateful I have no children in this pathetic school system.

This is just one more example of how can they instill qualities (in this instance, responsible decisions) when they prove they do not possess those qualities.

You just simply cannot give away what you do not have.

I think he is Over Paid! How much work does he actually do? My husband and I bust our butts 5-6 days a week and we don't make as much as he does and yes we both have a college degree.

Subs make 60 dollars a day whether or not they are certified. It is not an hourly wage we sign up for. If i work half days then I only get 30. Hourly it would round out to about 9 dollars an hour with taxes taken out; however subs get a lunch break and planning period just like teachers do and have that time off. That being said we don't actually work 7hrs a day. More like six.

We are talking about Mr. Wood here. He makes as much as 4 school teachers do in a year! Ridiculous!

He gave us a big speech at the beginning if the year, as he does every year, saying how broke the school is and how we need to hang in there. There's just not enough money and he wants to blame the state, so on and so forth. It makes me sick that he took this raise. If a school is "broke" that falls on the shoulders of the super. Is weatherford hiring?

This problem is not unique to Elk City. Superintendents state wide are paid too much. Most of them are not educators but coaches tired of coaching. Coaching positions should be filled by educators who would like to make some money(2 or 3 thousand a year maybe) on the side. Not a bunch of arrogant jocks who could not hold down a real job. To get back on point it works out that educators (teachers) actually educate the children but get short pay while jocks get a degree in recreation then screw off playing grab a%¥ for a few years then we pay them $120.00 a year to "manage" our schools. They are dunces! They should be in the corner with a cone on their head! They don't know or care about budgets or education!

Like many other Suprintendents across Oklahoma, he's in it for the money. Home schooling is the answer. If he didn't have his ADA he wouldn't have a job.

The Board of Education did the School District great harm with this raise and the message it sends to the taxpaying public. You are right - there will be no bond issue passed under this regime regardless of the need. There are other positions that are paid well for nothing. Bet a few bucks could be located in administration and sports, especially those that contribute NOTHING to the bottom line.

Making more than Edmond and Lawton??? Really??? Maybe there needs to be a recall of the Board of Education??? Three high dollar Administrators, tooooooo many coaches, too large of classes, obsolete technology, poor morale, etc. and there is a huge raise for Mr. Wood. Say goodbye to ANY Bond Issue Passed until the Administration Building has Spring cleaning. Let's say goodbye to the top three and then we will talk Bond Issue.

Tooooo many coaches? You obviously don't know what you're talking about there. Where do you think they start "trimming the fat"?
This is not a "sport administration". These administrators are former special Ed teachers who don't care much about sports at all.
