The Press Republican - One injured fighting Ticonderoga fire

One firefighter was slightly injured early this morning putting out a fire that heavily damaged a single-family home here. The 48 Cossey St. residence in Ticonderoga was owned and occupied by Darren and Jacqueline Fleury, who got out safely.

The cause of the 4:30 a.m. blaze is under investigation by the Essex County Fire Investigation Unit, but is not considered suspicious.

Ticonderoga Emergency Squad took one firefighter, who was not identified, to Moses-Ludington Hospital for treatment of a back injury sustained while battling the fire.

Ticonderoga First Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Watts was one of the first to arrive at the two-story wood-frame home.

“There was a lot of fire in the first floor. Mr. Fleury was outside and indicated that no one was inside,” he said. “The fire spread quickly throughout the rest of the first floor and extended upstairs to the second floor and attic. Also hampering our effort was the fact that the power line to the house broke off and was in front of the house.” But Anthony Morette, a professional electrician who lives next door, came to their aid and moved the power line out of the way, Watts said. “That was a really big help to us.”

The American Red Cross local chapter is providing assistance for the Fleurys, Watts said.

i hope that the fire fighter is ok.. to get hurt volunteering is a big sacrifice.

Yes it does suck to be a volunteer and get hurt, this poor firefighter has a family, and is proably going to loss some time from work!!! I just hope and pray to god that the rumors going around how this fire started are just that rumors and if not that the investergators found out the truth. a cigarette started the fire. i hope the firefighter gets better. i also wish the fleurys the best of luck. they no they have friends & family that will help them through it. thank you to all who helped. i didnt see where close friend was making any accusations about the firefighter. hopefully with prayers he'll be alright. but as it was stated Ti is all RUMORS!!

AUHHH sorry i dont have an issue with Tony he is a very nice guy!!!!! I just have an issue with the wife telling the police that the husband started the fire and a firefighter got seriously hurt and now they are in walmart in love again...Please folks get some much needed help in your life! No ones life is perfect, but for you to tell the police that he tried to burn you that to me is a probelm in itself...good luck and god bless you!

Everyone can be very thankful that we have a Fire Co. that is dedicated as this one. I'm thankful no one was killed. Think about it folks; How many times do we see in the newspapers the people that die in fires everyday? Not to mention the countless number of firefighters that lose their lives every year fighting fires and protecting life and property. Thanks Ti Fire. I know I can sleep well at night knowing they are there for us.

We (Port Henry Fire) got there at the end, but it’s was still impressive to see Ti fire at work. As always they area very well trained group. Ti is a awesome Fire department and I wish the best for the firefighter and his family.
