Senate panel backs schools' return to five calamity days

Moving quickly to reverse an education initiative of former Gov. Ted Strickland's, a Senate committee yesterday unanimously supported legislation allowing districts to use five calamity days, commonly called snow days, this school year. Full Story

Thanks God. Our kids are becoming too educated. They need more time at home sitting in front of the TV, eating Doriotos, getting fat like Shannon Jones.

So does that mean our kids have to make up time in this year ? I'm for the three days and any more would have to made up. I'll book my vacation for July just in case !

Now they decide after most days are used up. It's like deciding you need to find a bathroom

after eating too many sliders 10 hours ago.....too late now.

That means an extra week off for teachers

yeah. Let's make our already floundering students spend less time in school than they already are. Great idea!

Since adding days on to the end of year are so productive for both students and teachers, let's go ahead and add 20 more days onto the school year, without a clue as to how cash strapped school districts will pay the teachers for extra days added to their contract.

They should just do it without further ado. If they need proof attend the last week of school and see all that occurs. Not much teaching/learning going on.

We have had five calamity days for as long as I can remember. This bill is just reversing Strickland's change. It isn't as if the state is giving teachers a bunch of extra time off.

Republicans have always hated the idea and practice of public education and this bill helps prove it.

As with physical education and nutrition education why not just give public school administrators the option of whether to offer any instruction intended to be educational.

Days added to the end of the already too short school year are wasteful and useless in so many ways; make-up days during winter/Christmas/Easter/spring breaks are equally so as would be Saturday classes.

A longer day of instruction may be beneficial - longer class periods?

Did they move too fast on this momentous bill?

Children need to be in school more days, not less:

-Ranked 28th in science.
-Ranked 21st in math among, industrialized nations.

Former Gov. Strickland was right to add more days to the school year. Kasich and the Republicans are negating the school reforms put forward by the previous administration. Our children are the losers. This does not bode well for the future of the United States.

It seems to me that every day the Statehouse is open for business is another calamity day. Statewide.
When do you think they'll try to make up for their shortcomings? How?

If the administration of our schools were effective, we'd continue to have real teaching and learning in our schools on makeup days and at the end of the school year.
I'll bet the administrators never heard of the concept of "managing by walking around." Where is the principle of "planning, organizing and controlling?" How about, "plan ahead?" How about avoiding the antics of Gene Harris and the Columbus School Board?

They should have never taken them away in the first place. It was stupid. We live in Ohio! Of course we're going to get sever weather sometimes in the winter!

Stop trying to torture the kids....

They never should have been reduced to 3days. This is OHIO people. If you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes and it will change....

How does SB 5 prove that Republicans hate public education? I'm a Republican and like Public Education, so who are you talking about? SB 5 shows the Republicans are serious about leveling the playing field, and care about saving teacher jobs by giving school districts more flexibility in dealing with financial crisis. And to lengthen the school year- how is this going to be paid for? I do agree that schools should be measured by hours of instruction, not days. Many countries who go to school for longer amount of days actually are in school less hours during the day, thus the U.S. fares much better in terms of total time spent in school.
