" Walsh disputed those contentions. She pointed to the numbers for multiple drunken driving convictions in Ohio.

''We are seeing way too many repeat offenders on the road,'' Walsh said."

And that would be because WAY to many are let off the hook by allowing deals, plead guilty to this and we'll drop this and this and you only have to pay this amount and we'll suspend jail time.....so of course there will be repeat offenders.
Then you have the ones that habitually drive someone's car " for work".... seeing as offender doesn't have a license OR insurance and car owners knowingly give them the keys why aren't the car owners charged? According to Ohio DUI laws allowing a person to drive your car knowing they have a suspened license or no insurance gets YOUR license suspended for 30 days. Second time it happens YOU forfeit YOUR car.
Why isnt this enforced?
I can think of 3 offhand that are multiple offenders, going through Cuyahoga Falls courts , that were stopped for DUI / DWI/ FRA etc...multiple offenders driving their ex-wife, brothers, sisters, vehicles.
NOT ONCE did any of those people who KNEW the offender had no right to drive receive any sanctions ! THen the offender did at maximum 90 days , only to get out , be picked up by ex, sister or brother and start all over again.!
WHy make more "laws" that in my opinion infringe on our rights < probable cause> when they dont bother to enforce or applthe ones already written?? No deals, no reduced sentences nada. Do the crime, do the time.... ALL of it.

Evidently the legislatures don't have a clue how to help improve the business climate to spur investment and draw new businesses so they have to look for other ways to appear to be doing something.

More draconian DUI laws and forced specimen taking will not solve the problem. This idea is just more pandering to MADD and some segments of the population.

I had already decided to vote against Strickland next election, but now I am beginning to really question if I want to stay in a state that puts so much effort into everything BUT helping its economy improve.

All of this smacks of Nazi Germany...."Papers please"

No one wants drunk drivers anywhere but increasing police power which already exceeds the former gestapo, is a bad idea. The police are thugs with badges. Revenue generation is the primary goal. How else does anyone explain the fact that while the police hassle people for traffic "violations" the criminals who might shoot back, run free a few blocks away- we all know where the druggies and gangstas hang out- yet the police are hassling working people going to and from their jobs-

Oh yeah, two words: Traffic cameras.

This is just more evidence that these moron politicians don't have a clue. This is just another way for this screwed up state to rob its citizens of more of their hard earned money. Not one of them care one bit about getting drunk drivers off the road. It's all about the money this will generate. Vote every one of these jackasses out of office.

This will do nothing to decrease DUI drivers. It does, however, allow the government to rape you on a whim.

Gee, why would you want a judge to review the reasons why a cop would want to force blood from your body? What could possibly go wrong?

I guess the State of Ohio now considers your blood and urine public property. Coming up next - forced blood drives. It's for the good of the people, after all. Line up and roll up your sleeve, comrade.

Right on! It's the penalties that need to be strengthened. I have not reviewed the language recently, but the language of the laws need to be changed where Judges are given no option whatsoever and have to sentence the offender per statute. That means if the penalty says "shall", then under law, it MUST be that sentence.

Although many penalties under statute contain that language, some also contain "may", which gives the Judges an option. Penalties for repeat drunk drivers should be jail AND fines. No other options. No pleading at all should be allowed -- especially if someone was killed or seriously injured.

I hate drunk drivers, but I agree with you. We don't need more laws. We need to strength the penalties.

So, vote them out of office because they want the criminals to pay? What's wrong with that? I don't see why you're complaining about "citizens being robbed of hard-earned money" in this case. Unless you're caught drinking and driving again, this isn't costing you anything.

As I've said before, the focus really needs to be on strengthening current penalties and not giving Judges any option on sentences.
Thank you Walsh

I've been hit by drunk drivers twice in the last 15 years. I also have an uncle that was killed by a drunk driver. The law targets those that are arrested for the THIRD or more time. Why would you have pity on someone that can't learn and that continues to risk your life and mine by driving drunk. Drink all you want at home or get a cab or designated driver. Thank you Prosecutor Walsh for watching out for the law abiding citizens of Summit County.

Any measure that 'expands police powers' is a blow to freedom. In the name of making us behave ourselves, the state of Ohio and the USA will continue to slide into the tyranny of the police state.

They will pass more and more laws, normally behind our backs, to protect us from ourselves. And once passed..... go ahead and try to get an unpopular law repealed. Just try. Try emptying Lake Erie with a bucket.

The language of the article makes everything seem well thought out, but.....

The use of subjective words like "suspected" and "probable cause" allows for a very broad interpretation of events and very definitely allows for misuse of authority.'No warrant needed' definitely will lead to abuse. Just lip off to the cop and see how fast.

"Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh, who worked extensively on the bill with its sponsor, state Sen. Timothy Grendell, R-Chesterland, said she believes it will ''significantly help deter repeat offenders from continuing to drive drunk on our roadways.''

BOTH of them are seriously deluding themselves if they think this is a magic pill that will cure the problem. Note the language "significantly help deter", which of course means nothing can get better and they can still congratulate themselves.

'Deter' is difficult to assess.'Help deter' isn't even quantifiable.

People HAVE to drive. Many of you will toe the line and mouthpiece those in power, saying "driving is a priviledge not a right'.

Even so, drunks still have to get to their jobs, and public transportation in this country is a joke. So they will continue to 'repeat offend'.

It's rather apparent that you need to be more concerned about the lack of education in this Country than any law restricting your party time !

Thats what they do in a socialized state! Come into your house on suspect authority. Fools make policy as they have no life's experience. Walsh's liberal education is her guide and we have seen what that brings us. Her next step is a higher political office which means more of the same poor decisions. My position is Walsh is in need of much much more experience.
