House approves livestock board

Hoping to derail a push by the Humane Society of the United States for tougher livestock-containment restrictions in Ohio, state lawmakers rushed to pass a ballot issue yesterday that supporters say would keep control of agriculture inside the state. Full Story

Way to go legislature!! What the 67 percent of Ohioans do not realize is that the extreme measures being pushed by the Humane Society will make meat unaffordable for all but the elite. There is no need for these measures. Family farmers care lovingly for their animals and do everything they can to assure their comfort. This is an effort by an extreme left-wing organization to make vegans of us all. DO NOT BE FOOLED!!

"This bill will enact simple yet meaningful changes to our system of justice that will modernize Ohio's best practices so that the best interests of justice can be served," said Sen. David Goodman, R-New Albany.

Translation: "This phony reform measure will let us pretend we did something about animal cruelty but make it harder for the Humane Society and others to get real standards like California now has. It will also make the knee-jerk right-wingers at the Ohio Farm Bureau and the Industrial Ag folks happy, and after all, they fund our campaigns."

Some might be surprised to know that the Humane Society's political action arm endorsed the likes of Rick Santorum, Deb Pryce and other right-wing extremists in 2006, which is a matter of record. I will never forgive them for that -- their GOP endorsees had terrible records on wildlife protection, and the endorsements were breathtakingly phony and inappropriate. But I am glad they are working on decent living conditions for livestock now -- what we allow today is unspeakable.

The elite would be a lot better off if they reduced their meat consumption in any event. And we all got along pretty well back before Industrial Ag started putting hogs in pens where they can't even turn, "debeaking" chickens and stuffing animals so full of antibiotics that those drugs no longer work on humans.

Do you know what chickens would do to each other if they were not debeaked? It is not a sight you would like to see! Taking them out of their cages would only make this worse! Please don't speak as if you know how animal agriculture in this state operates, because you clearly do not!

I know they do a heckuva lot better out in the open like they were for centuries instead of crammed into miles of cages at places like the old Agrigeneral -- whatever it's current name is these days. Anyone saying it's good or humane to treat chickens the way factory farms do is telling a baldfaced lie.
