We're new to the area. Who can tell us why the whole area smells like garbage. This is the first day we've smelled it but it has lasted all day and seems even stronger tonight.

That is the smell of money! It is from the industry in town, used to be a 100 times worse, back when most people made a good living in the plants and the town was thriving

The plants in the area smell and it's more noticeable during certain weather conditions. Took me a while to get used to it when I moved here but after a while it doesn't seem so bad.

You can have many different smells on any given day in Hopewell. The "garbage" smell you describe is most likely RockTen's paper pulp. Then there is the smell of sulfur from Honeywell. Another day could bring on the smell of asphalt, from Regional Enterprises when they are loading/unloading. Another offender coming from one of the plants is the cat pee smell. This hasn't been as bad as it was 30 years ago, but still a horrible.
The latest addition to our group of odors is the smell from the Ethanol plant. However, when you walk outside and smell this one, you feel like going back in and baking bread.

Looks like you are in Colonial Heights, it's probably coming from Trash Mountain by walmart
