Full story: WTVR 34

bull, bull and more bull.Remember the state is paid for every inspection plus some. Its all about who you know, know someone that can do a fair inspection, great. If you dont your at the mercy of these scum bags.CBS should ask mr state police why when we drive down the road we see exploded tractor trailer tires, motorcycles that are clearly way to loud to have a mandatory muffler, cars that cant get out of their own way, etc.State inspections are a joke, everyone knows its a scam and CBS/channel 6 has the weakest reporters I have ever seen.To all state inspectors, just do your job, face the fact that your job in 2-4 years will not be needed anymore and you will be washing the very cars you rejected yesterday.

"you have 15 days to make repairs, but can still get a ticket"

Then what is it that's happening during that 15 days? Does that make sense to anyone else?
Someone please explain.

inspections have been a racket since the begining of time, i took my car in to be inspected to a very popular place, and they wanted to fail me because a license plate light was out, they tried to charge me $35 to replace, i fixed it for $1.79.

Yeah I went to Mike and Rands and they failed me because they said my tires were bad and my brake pads were too low. Well my tires were low on tread but not down to the wear bars and when I checked the VA Safety Guide, I was within the limits. I went to Firestone on Midlothian two days later and what do you know, I passed inspection! When I had my tires changed, I did my own brake work and when I got the pads out they still had 50% of the pad left! I called the inspector and he said he went out, but I was never refunded my 15$ by Mike and Rands, so bottom line, DON'T EVER TAKE YOUR CAR TO MIKE AND RAND'S! And don't expect the state troopers to get your money back.

This is why you get a good mechanic that you know to do the inspection for you. I have one that is honest and will not rip me off. Even if something has to be repaired he is very reasonable, actually too reasonable to the point that you feel you are ripping the guy off. I have on more than one occasion left the guy a tip because of this and told him to go do something nice for his family or something with it. Even with his low prices he does really good work and stands behind it 100%. Like I had a minor problem with one of his repairs and I just stopped by, told him, and stopped what he was doing and fixed it for nothing. A quick example of his rates, I bought a good set of rotors and pads for my car and didn't feel like putting them on myself so I took it to him, he charged me $40 to put 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads on it.

You have 15 days to get the repairs done, and you can take it back to the shop that rejected it and get your car re-inspected for just $1.If you wait past that,it's the same old full inspection fee all over again.
It does not give you 15 additional days to drive the vehicle. You can still be ticketed and believe me,the police will pull you over if they see you driving on a rejection sticker. If it was rejected for something that's a serious safety hazzard(brakes, bald tires, etc) the police can take your tags off your car and leave you sitting on the side of the road with no license plates.

I took my car to Midas of Richmond and somehow the boots on my car wheels were cut. When I took it to dealership it said that it was an intentional cut with a serrated knife. It was clearly not normal wear and tear. I guess midas can collect backpacks but they can't be honest

the state does not make any money on inspections, except $1.00 for each sticker written.noisy exhaust systems are not a safety issue, therefore mufflers are not required.customer can still be ticketed for excessive noise.pieces of tires on the road are usually due to overloaded vehicles, not bad inspections.you are at risk of a faulty equiptment ticket if you have driven a week or so and have done nothing to repair your vehicle.most inspectors are good guys, but there are some that are not.as far as the program only lasting 2-4 years,va. is too conservative of a state to eliminate the program.keep in mind that it a safety program,so you, your family and the rest of the people on the road have at least a half of a chance of getting to their destination and back.i myself have been an inspector for 26 yrs.here in va.and not all inspectors are not scum bags.thank you very much!

Most of them that I have known are good guys. There are some, however, that have a feeling of empowerment over the public and see it as an opportunity to put you over a barrel to get your sticker.I've found that a little bit of knowledge can often keep this type at bay.I have a crack in my windshield as an example. It's not in the field of vision and it is not going to spread. It's been through 5 inspections like that, yet occasionally one will threaten to fail the inspection over it.When I point out the facts about the crack they usually back off.
I'm glad we have a safety inspection. If there's something major wrong with my vehicle I WANT to know about it!They feel compelled to sell you something so when they say the wiper blades are worn I usually let them charge me three prices to fix it and get my sticker.
