Socialism is so intertwined within our capitalistic society one can't really tell the difference..... of course, the rethugs think they know but really don't.

No, it is a monopoly, and a very profitable one for the state and the citizens.
The ABC stores would be the perfect sales outlet for legalized Marijuana. The mechanisms are already in place for control and taxation.
Budget problems would be a thing of the past if they legalized, taxed, controlled and sold marijuana.
A monopoly? That goes against the rethugs idea on communism and socialism. Sell the damn stores to private enterprise, and get the state outta the business of poisioning the participantes.

I don't see it as socialism. Yes, it is the government controlling the sales, but Virginia does not look like NY, MD or DC with liquor stores on every other corner in urban areas.
That is exactly what the last plan would have allowed by tripling the number of store licenses sold by the state to replace the current 339 stores without any increase in the enforcement arm of the agency.
Not a good plan IMO.
State ownership of the liquor stores amounts to socialism/communism.
Reduce the size of government....its a teaBAGGER proposition.

Just because it could be privatized doesn't necesarily mean it's the best thing.

In the case of the ABC, it was proven that the state would actually LOSE money by going private + the public would NOT get booze for lower prices. To be able to keep the same level of $$ coming in and going to the state, private concerns would have to charge the public MORE to keep the tax $ at the same level. Therefore, there is NO reason to go private and have the state lose $. Also, regardless of the fact that McD had a hair up his ass about going private, it's the members of the General Assembly who would have their head on the chop block if the whole mess blew up in their face and they faced a short-fall by going private. And they're NOT willing to have to take the blame for YEARS for McD's wild hair.

There is no way the state is going to give up this money cow when they make money from selling it to the dumb drunks who get caught driving. They are making money on both ends.

What they won't tell you is the cost of damage it does to all families and taxpayers that have to deal with these drunks.

If a person is going to drink, it simply doesn't matter whether it's private or state controlled.

Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. And unless you want to reinstate proabition (and we All know that didn't work), it is what it is. As said before, tho, the proceeds do fund the DARE program and other educational programs.

Necesary evil.
