What's it like in Browns Mills?

[I have lived in Browns Mills since 1969, Graduated in 1972 from Pemberton High. Married and lived in Trenton, and decided that the city life was not for my four children. Packed up and moved back to Browns Mills. You see, as I was growing up in BM, I've learned that the simple things in life is always at your back door. Moving to the city was not a way to raise children. Coming home to BM, my children learned about nature, life, respect thy neighbor, and to get along with everyone. Life in BM is great. The best time in BM for me is the winter months. The snow is beautiful laying on the ground, the water is lovely with ice on it,(hopefull we will be allowed to ice skate on it again soon) the air is clean and crisp. What more could a person ask for? I love it. We could of moved anywhere in the U.S., however Browns Mills won hand over fist. Great place to live.

Browns Mills has been a shit hole for decades! High crime, white trash, drug dealers/users and military burn outs! No where to shop or eat. I would never recommend anyone attempt to raise a family here. School systems is the pits too.

i have raised all my kids in browns mills, i have never had a problem here, and love the lake views, people say that bad things happen here, but not anymore then anywhere else these days, i have been in this area all my life and enjoy it here, we have a lot of stuff here going on for the kids, like the water carnival which is decorated boats on the lake at night with a really great fire work show over the lake, we have the winter parade and activities for the kids, they close the street down for that and the tree lighting is after it, and a few other things, it is very diverse here and i love that for my kids...

Stumbled upon this site when researching our family history. My grandmother owned a summer home in Browns Mills during the 60's that was somewhere along North or South Lakeshore Dr. We used to spend allot of time there until she died when I was less than 10 yrs old. Can anyone tell me if there's an "old" section of town where I can start trying to find her home? My parents can't remember the address, just that it was on the road surrounding the lake. Thank you!

Unfortunately, there's a lot of lakes, lots of old sections. Very tough question, maybe you can be more specific.

I've been living in Country Lakes (CL) for almost 5 years, relocated here from Long Island. At first it was a big shock because on the island, I could walk or catch a bus and get to a bowling alley, Blockbuster, Pathmark, Chinese buffet, Borders etc etc in like 10 mins, give or take the traffic. As other people said, the area grows on you.
On the downside--yes, everything is like 20 minutes away (major shopping & entertainment like movies). Yes, Acme in Browns Mills is terrible--they need competition! Yes, there's not much for teenagers to do around here. Public transportation is virtually non-existent--you must have a car to live out here.
On the upside--it's really pretty here and it's quiet. On our side of CL, our neighbors are mostly retired but there are plenty of young families nearby. My youngest has lots of friends whose families live in PL and the lots are big and there are pletny of trees and parks. There are a lot of military families because of Ft. Dix/McGuire so there's a big turnover what with transfers and stuff. The value of our home has nearly doubled in the 4 years we've lived here.
We have a new mayor now in Browns Mills and hopefully things will get even better.

My husband & I are from North Jersey and are looking for a home. We have two small children and want a safe place to live but do not want to be on top of our neighbors. We are just starting out and can't afford the current real estate market. Browns Mills seems to have affordable homes but I know nothing about it.There are so many areas(Presidential Lakes, Country Lake Estates, etc.).Does the area flood often? Looking for a town that is kid friendly, has good schools and a pretty area.(We love the outdoors). Thank you for any information you can give me!

I was station at McGuire in the late '80's and early '90's and went there on occasion. I thought it was the pits but I'm sure some improvements were made by now. Besides, there's good and bad everywhere.

All these people trashing the mills makes me laugh. Like this is the only town in America that has problems. I've was born and raised here. Even though I have moved to other places at one time or another I always find myself coming back. As I grow older I find myself loving this place more and more. 5 minutes from my house I can be in the pines. In 40 minutes I can be at seaside heights, L.B.I., or great adventure. In an hour I can be in philly or ac.

Hoodz in the woodz, not a bad place, but FY-NJ: yep for sure that is there, god, its like dixie's trailer park listening to some of the stuff you hear. Kind of a shame with a beautiful lake and scenery but a hodgepodge of orderly rooms that were sold off from fort dix and made into actual homes and additions built later. However I find if you keep to yourself, and keep a smile on, most people are not going to bother you. If you are looking for trouble, you obviously can find it.
