As a former firefighter I can testify that a monitored smoke detector can save your life. In most fire deaths, people don't die from fire, they die from smoke inhalation. Chemicals in smoke can quickly leave you dizzy, delirious or unconscious. A typical detector sounds a loud warning, and that's it. A monitored smoke detector sounds the same warning but can dial the phone and call for help. There's a small fee for monitoring, but this is something worth thinking about. When seconds count is too late for what you could have done. Just my thought.
