Martin's offers new features, keeps many Ukrop's touches

Shoppers are likely to feel right at home at the Tri-Cities' newest grocery store, for the most part.

I did not see much difference between Martins and Ukrops. They just changed the sign, added beer and lowered selective prices of items. No big change overall. I was dissappointed

ditto westender! lets see some real change...maybe an increased stock assortment, fresh fish, maybe some new employees who don't think they are entitled.

I am a long time Ukrop shopper who does not see a lot of difference on the outside, except for the ABC sales and Sunday opening. I do think that the store has lost some of the things that made it special, such as, the two above mentioned items along with the people to carry the bags to the car (without asking). On a less visable and more inside note, I do know that the home office was gutted of past and some long time employees and mid level managers at the stores were forced to take status as well as pay cuts. I, also know, that employees lost accumilated leave time as well as sick time. Today is the first time I have ever heard Ukrop employees called entitled as I have never been to a Ukrop and had less than first class friendly service. That was always one of the main factors (along with being exceptional clean stores) for my being willing to pay a few dollars more for the shopping experience.

Reality, I agree with you, Ukrops was a top notch store thats why that could get away with the higher price structure that they had for soo long. I think that Joseph and they other siblings got tired of the game and now wants to do something else. they have been in Richmond for aq long time and sometimes people need change. plus one of the daughters being married to Jonny Johnson didnt help their reputations when he went out of business, It kinda kills your reputation when you've put your own credability on the line as they did with investing in Johnsons Community Pride chains. I dont kow anything about MARTINS but i DO KNOW ONE THING, THEY HAVE SOME LARGE SHOES TO FILL HERE IN RICHMOND,lets hope that they brought their shoe laces.
