Just can't get over some of these nasty, cruel, and degrading comments toward some of the candidates in the upcoming election. I mean, don't you folks realize that Marmet is a tiny little town?? We're not living in some metropolis that requires these back-door political games.
Yeah, we all know the town needs a change. Bill has ran his course & his time is up. It's time for him to get put out into the pasture, but that doesn't mean that anyone hates the guy. That's what many people fail to realize. When elections roll around, the citizens are provided the opportunity to cast a vote for the person that they believe will BEST do the job. Yes, previous records are taken into consideration. Yes, a candidate's character is also taken into consideration. And then, these new candidates that have never before held public office are given the chance to prove themselves faithful to what they say they will do. Nevertheless, none of these considerations warrant anyone totally demoralizing a candidate. When someone shows up for a job interview, the Human Resources officer for the company can't sit there & verbally destroy someone. Instead, they must look at the information before them, ask the applicants questions about themselves, and make the best possible decision to hire the person that best fits the job requirements. Why should an election be any different??
Everyone is aware of Bill's inability to manage a town government. His best years are behind him, and so are Marmet's unless we elect someone else. Still, no one deserves to be brutally attacked when they have no chance of defending themselves. You all know Bill's old butt doesn't get on Topix, so your efforts to talk about him on here will bear no fruit.
Bobby is more than open about his personal life & marital status, so why drag it through the mud? If you have a question or opinion about it, muster up the dignity to stand before him and have a conversation about it instead of bashing him behind his back.
And we're all aware that Ruth quit her term on council because her husband didn't get his free insurance, so why keep the constant discussion going? It's old news, folks! If you think that she's a quitter & you want her to know that's why she will not get your support, then tell her about it or keep your opinion to yourself. Starting drama on Topix accomplishes nothing.
I think it's perfectly acceptable to have an opinion about these candidates. They filed to run for public office so they opened themselves up to scrutiny. However, if you feel the need to express yourself, then do it in a manner that will matter or make a difference. Wouldn't it be a strange thing to find that if you actually had the courage to talk to these candidates about your concerns or rumors that you've heard, that they just might be able to give you the TRUTH about them?? Starting trash on Topix will accomplish nothing but stir controversy, and what good is that doing anybody?
Marmet is in the gutter. It's time that we take a stand and do what's right for this town instead of destroying it further by way of destroying each other. Aren't we a Community? Then lets act like it for a change! The result is always better when we lift each other up instead of tearing each other down.
This isn't Washington DC here, people! Marmet is just a little tiny town where we all know each other and we don't need the scare tactics or lies in our election. We need a fair election now more than ever so we can pull ourselves out of the slump we're in. Now, let's all grow up & have a fair election.

Down on the Corner - Very well said. A vote at the end of the day is your voice. I believe there was more to Ruth quitting than just insurance. There were a few lies by Bill, possibly, that lead her to believe he was approving her husband for insurance and with Jill in his back pocket that didn't happen. I also believe there is a misconception that Ruth is being supported by Bill and Jill and vice versa. Quite frankly, Jill and Ruth do not speak. Apparently, Jill didn't like a decision that was made in a past term and she's held a grudge since. We've all witnessed how Bill has talked to Ruth during past Council meetings. Degrading is an understatement.
Aside from this, it is great that the town is getting involved in the political race like never before. Before this election, it was a 'given' that Bill was the Mayor. Even with the Council candidates...pretty fantastic to see the amount of newer folks standing up to make a change!

Down on the Corner that was probably the most sensible statement I have read in all the nonsense that's being said about the election. I don't know who u are but I wish u would stand up at a town meeting and say exactly what u just said. If more people thought the way u do, our town wouldn't be in as bad as shape as it is. So many people now a days want to treat a person down, focus on the negative and not the positive. Thank u for sharing ur thoughts. It reminds me that there are still reasonable, sensible people in this world :)

Down, why not suggest citizens ask Ruth why she resigned, instead of making jabs, which aren't true. Her family needed her, and a role on council isn't as critical mayor. She didn't quit her job, and she continued to serve the town by volunteering, as she airways has. She had to go out of state with her husband, letting someone else step in her role at council was a responsible sacrifice. Mr. Wells even told her he didn't blame her, given the critical nature of what her family was dealing with. "Family first" he said. If he could be supportive at a dark time in her life and show compassion, I'm sure you could too. After all, her family has feelings as well.

Forward Progress and Concerned Citizen, thank you for your compliments.

Also Concerned, my intent was not to make jabs & I think I made it evident that I'm a huge advocate for the jabs and public smearing to cease because it gets us nowhere. My remarks about EACH of the Mayoral Candidates were mere examples of the hot rumors going around which are at the forefront of most of the mud-slinging threads on here. My use of the examples was to highlight that we've all heard these rumors a million times, and that people should go to each of the candidates to get the truth instead of playing the same old ugly record on Topix.
If you will pay attention to my original post, you will find that I did not favor any particular candidate. It was as balanced as it can get with the exception of basically saying that Marmet has no positive future with our current Mayor. Still, I didn't have to bring attention to any of his faults when I made my point. Therefore, the only conclusion I can find for you to respond in a defensive mode is that you are either a Ruth supporter, or perhaps Ruth herself? Either way, I am sorry that you took offense to my post, but I am not sorry for what I said in the post. My goal was to encourage people to stop the mud-slinging and get their info straight from the horse's mouth instead of from idiots on Topix. I'm sure that any candidate would appreciate that.

I am not attempting to be argumentative, so please do not take me as such. I simply find it to be most effective to be frank with people so there is no room for guessing. My opinion is that folks these days place entirely too much effort into being careful not to offend anyone or hurt their feelings. I don't have time for such nonsense.

I think Ruth is a very good woman. Bob told me his feelings about her resignation at Kroger shortly afterwards. I will likely vote for Ruth simply because I know her work ethic and character, but in fairness, I have not spoke with Bob. I have read a letter he gave a friend of mine, but I do want to listen to what he has to say. I feel I know Bill well enough since he's been in so long.

I agree the mud slinging is out of hand and is uncalled for, so I appreciate you trying to deter some of that. I see your point and perhaps mistook your intentions initially. I also agree this isn't the place to get your political information. Speaking with the respective candidates directly is the only way to get true information, or at least discern if the candidate is on the up and up. I'll take that a step further and suggest voters not listen the rumor mill either. It seems there has been much of that going around too. I also would not get my information about one candidate from another. The first sign of trashing each other (this goes for council too), our conversation will be done. I want to hear about what YOU stand for and that's it. I can decide for myself.

I suggest looking at their experience, not just in politics, but in careers, military service, community service, whatever the case may be. If they are a candidate wanting re-elected (same position or not), I suggest looking at their records. What their positions have been in the past in issues of concern.

Thanks for clarifying your position, Down. The other posts as well. All well said.

This has been all about Ruth, dont you know ruth and Jill are kin and they worked together for the Sanitary Dept on the paper work and Ruth was paid for it, if Her husband found out he would kill her. ruth supports Jill. she said Tammy wasnt qualified to do the job, don't you realize this is politics. Defending Ruth is so sweet. Truth is Bill had Ruth to run to bust up the votes like he does every election. He gets someone to run and promises them something, and he knows they can't say anything about it. Remember Bingo is shut down and Bill vowed to start it up with the new council he gets in. If you didnt know it all the equiptment is still in the rec building. Wonder who will be in charge of it and get a check. I figure we will have another new employee picking up trash again. Don't pitty the man, he plays possum. He is a true dirty politician and knows how to play the game. This was sweet of you to defend poor Ruth, but it won't work with alot of the people that already know the truth about the deal. So I hope the truth wasn't to negitive for you, make all those sweet pleas for her you want, the truth is the truth. Just ask Jilly and Billy, they can open your eyes. So if you elect the wrong people it will be another I told you so! Thank hard about !!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Down on the Corner this is not a mud slinging place to throw mud at the candidates. If you have a question ask them. And as far as Tammy goes has anyone ask if she is qualified? I know she has been walking around the town giving out letters about her qualifications. In that letter it stated that she has Computer Data Processing/Accounting and a Bachelor's Board of Regents Degree. I am sure if anyone would ask any of the candidates they would talk to you. I just do not feel this is the place to sling mud at anyone or the candidates. I myself I have nothing against any of the candidates. I am sure each felt that they could do the job that they was running for.

We know who sent the letter talking trash about the Mayor. Don't think you'll be getting as many votes as you think you will. This is a small town and I never dreamed mud slinging would get this bad. The Walker/ Samms family has many skeletons in ALL their closets. The Wells also. Just because you think you're better than the others running, you are the worst. I tore your letter up and Mayor Pauley will continue as Mayor until he decides that he has had enough. Grow up ! We're aren't stupid

I don't care who wrote the letter because it is completely true with two exceptions:

1) the "part-time" worker was actually only paid $14k, not $36k.
2) the D.E.P. fined us for the sewage spill, not the E.P.A.

Those are the ONLY two discrepancies in the letter. I know exactly who I am voting for, and that is my business, not yours, but I will be thrilled beyond measure if we all come together and elect someone other than Bill Pailey as our Mayor.

The Walkers wouldn't know all the information in that letter. That came from the inside. Council, city hall employee. Plus, they have no motive, nothing to gain. STUPID.
