Relocating to Norfolk/Hampton Roads. Have a few concerns.

Hello! In a couple of months, my little family and I will be moving to the Hampton Roads from a small town in North Carolina. To say we are excited is an understatement. It's a big deal to us because we haven't lived anywhere but here. We were planning on moving to Norfolk but after talking to a co-worker I started to worry a little. He claimed to have lived there about 4 months. He basically said Norfolk was filled with ghettos and gang-bangers. He also said that ex-sailors were taking all the decent jobs. He said the economy was awful, the cost of living was ridiculous, and the crime rate was insane. Now I don't want to believe that stuff because my wife and I really have our hearts set on Norfolk but the safety of our children is our top priority. We have considered VA Beach but it's my understanding that housing costs are higher and that is a major concern also. Any sight, advice, or experiences you all can share will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and take care.

Have you considered Chesapeake or Suffolk? There are great places in each of the big cities there. There are also really bad areas in all of them. Just get good advice before you move there. My son lives in VA Beach. He loves it. The housing is a little higher but not that much. The economy in VA Beach should be good for you. Of course that depends on what vocation you are looking into. I know a great real estate agent in Norfolk. He could give you great advice. If you will post some contact info, I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

I live in the Ghent section of Norfolk and I love it been a homeowner for 14 years here. Like ANY city there are bad section, rich section and such.
Jobs are here and economy I think is better than most parts of the country because of the military presence here.
I like it here there is so much to do here you have Waterside, the beach, Outer Banks, big malls, Town Center in VB.
Williamsburg, Kings Dominion and Busche Gardens not very far away. You will like it here.
