I was down there today (I live in Chesapeake City)and it looks abandoned and in disrepair. Docks are falling in the water, parking lots has junk and is overgrown. Haven't seen anyone touch it since summer '09.

We stopped by this weekend too, and yeah, certainly looks the same to us. We keep our boat on the Bohemia, so we're looking forward to it opening again... We also go to Giordanos in Kennett Square, last we heard there was that it was to open in February.. LOL!! Guess they met up with Cecil County Government

My wife and I were by SCH two weekends ago work is being done. As far as Gunther, he was old school. Grew up in Austria, came here with nothing was a well versed student of the school of make it on your own. His demeanor was not the best, he did however treat you well if you worked hard for him. I think that is what any employer would do. To all of those who have harsh words, everyone is entitled to a opinion. Just thought I would give mine. Cheaspeake Inn needs someone to force them to charge less for what they serve.$ 9 for a dixie cup of Chardonay. Come on !!!!!!!!!

I live in town and the property is in bad shape - at this point waterfont condos with a slip for each homeowner would get the $ for it - another restaurant owner would go under before they had enough time to get a following. The rent alone on a property that large would have to be over 15k a month - what tentant would pay that? There are tumbleweeds in CC in the winter. In regards to CI and BH, I frequent both of those places, nice places to go have a good meal. BTW I never had wine in a dixie cup for $9 at CI. My wine is always in glass. Its actually half price one night a week I think.

Worked at SCH when Sunkler first reopened (~1971?) long time ago. Must admit Sunkler was a strict SOB and ran a tight ship...but sure learned a lot from him and would love to hear from some of the 'old crew...1971-73...UDEL college students (use to compete for window tables, jazzy renditions of Happy Birthday, who had the best table flowers?). Any of you out there?

Can anyone give an update on what is going on with Schaefer's Canal House? Last I heard, the new owner tried to burn the place down. It was investigated on 4-20-07. Don't know the outcome. Work on the docks is on going, but there does not appear to be much else happening.

I just called the number to see if they have anything going on for Easter. I used to go there for Easter brunch a while back and have such a great time and the food is just out of this world, awesome food (seafood) the number has been disconnected.

Back in the 80s I waitressed at SCH for a long time. It was a fun place to work, most of the time, and I loved walking the docks. One of the neatest sounds ever in the winter is listening to big chunks of ice hitting each other as they float thru the canal. I'm not sure why it popped into my head but does anyone remember the name of the chef who worked there way back then? He had some trouble over the board, and Sunkler was able to get him back to the States and working at SCH again. I was just curious if anyone knew where he may have gotten to. And did Hooters come to town?

Too bad the place closed up and all the rumors about it re-opening. Wish at least one of them was true.
Wife and I had a few great anniversary dinners there, buffet style.
Seems like as soon as we got accustomed to eating there on a somewhat regular basis, it closed up.
Drove up there from Bel Air over the weekend just to see what was going on as I too had heard the auction was canceled.
Parking lot needed a lot of weed work done.
The buildings could really stand some work, but I can understand that if you don't use it why maintian it.
Even the canal pilots building, next to it looked like it needed a bunch of work done to it.
A lot of great food was served there. Hope it does re-open and wish any new operator(s) luck.

Bill Blanton who used to date Massanna? Did you start in '78? I think you took over from me as Ceil McFarland's pet that summer. I also worked with Massanna at the Hotel.

Sorry dude, I worked there, he was a bastard. Some kid wrote something disparaging about him in the men's locker room, so he took away our employee meals for the summer. These meals BTW were so awful that waiters would regularly go home sick after eating them.

We celebrated our 1st anniversary there in 1976 and since today is our daughter's 1st anniversary, it left me wondering if Schaefer's was still around. Does anyone have an update since last July? We moved to the midwest in 77 and haven't been back.

I would like to wish Giordanos good luck, I hope you are successful. It is a shame the place sat vacant so long, You have a lot of work to do before you turn your first buck. Good luck!

Work is progressing at SCH. Workers were building out door bars and removing trees & planters from the parking lot. I spoke with the roofing contractor who will installing a new roof (ocean blue) in mid November. He said there will be a huge wrap around deck coming off of the second floor of the restaurant. He estimated the "soft" opening to be in mid February 2012 and the grand opening to be March 1. It will be nice to have an alternative to the Chesapeake Inn. The contractor also told me that the CI had pay $270,000 for dredging the Hole in the Wall - that is why prices have increased so much.
